ok, I know this is vauge, but a friend of mine has a good setup, nice equipment, and I've talked him through all the right steps to setup, just to make sure (he lives 3,000 mile away)
, but he still has one problem and the simple question is this, does cakewalk have any not usually known volume settings for inputs. I have talked to him (and the possiblity might be that he's expecting more than he can get) and everything seems fine, he says the sound is "puny". he might just need to EQ it a bit to make the sound come out more. He is recording electric guitar. and I don't use cakewalk at all anymore. thanks

The input levels are typically under the control of the sound hardware's drivers (e.g., the Delta Control Panel for M-Audio Delta series cards) or use the generic Windows Mixer applet -- not by the recording software.

Just let him know when you record, if you turn the volume down in Sonar/Home Studio, it DOES NOT effect the recording volume. As Al said, all volume adjustments are done through the audio cards control panel, or it if is an external sound card like mine through the gain control nob on the sound card.

he's using a cheap preamp ($100), 1in 1out. Not sure of the brand, never heard of it. I told him to get a ART TPS or something similar, but he got what was at the store. He's using a SM57 mic with a Line 6 Flextone amp. He has an Audiophile 24/96 card. He is also having trouble with using his new audiophile with his audio out. He has to use his old card.

He needs to get into the M-Audio Delta Control panel, Patchbay/Router tab and select Monitor Mixer. Then in the Monitor Mixer tab adjust the output levels, make sure nothing's muted etc.

If he's got 2 sound cards, it might pay to disable the old one in the bios, and make sure they're not sharing an IRQ
