Has anyone ever seen or heard a frettless guitar, that is not a bass guitar? I read somewhere that Pat Metheny plays one on an album. Are there nylon-covered strings available for guitars other than for a bass?
In the '80's, an English company called 'Bond' made a non-wood (I don't remember if it was fibre-glass or graphite or ...?) which had no frets. Instead, it had a sort of stepped design that was not smooth (like a fretless bass) but was not fretted in the traditional sense.
It was very sterile sounding. As for a traditional 'fretless' guitar ... why?
you should definitley check out http://www.fretlessguitar.com if has alot of info on the instrument - how it is used, artists, manufacturers as well as some interactive examples of what it sounds like.
Actually - I just checked the site and realized that the site is really a Fernandes site. I guess they are one of the few that make them. There is another site i went to though that had more objective info. I can't remember the url though. I found it with an alta vista search i think. Sorry.
Years ago I had a record by a couple of acoustic jazz guitarists. One was named Philip Catherine. I think he's French, or something. Anyway, He played a frettless guitar in a couple songs. Great sound texture for guitar, very unusual. Like a fretless Bass sound in many ways, but still different.
Mdk, There is a review of the Glissentar in the December issue of guitar player. Check it out. It sounds like it would be very difficult to play. I once had a fretless bass and traded it in because it was hard for me to play.
funny to hear of this again after so long...Larry Corryell(spelling?) did some cuts with Chico Hamilton on Impulse in 70's with a fretless and was...? If you truly need to abuse yourself that much wouldn't it be easier to join a cult? (meant in good fun from one who spent 15 years w/ fretless bass)
