frequency?

K ive been doing alot of mixing and mastering for about 4-5 years but ive only been doing it by ears...i want to learn how to record like 4 sets of vocals and play them all at once but making them sound completly soft together....same thing as in doubling my track and mixing the vocals to make them sound squished together and soft sounding...my only guess is frequencys? Can anyone help me with this please

Ears are the ONLY tool that everyone has to use for mixing! You'll have to define what you mean by 'completely soft together'. Maybe EQ, compression, reverb?

You know when you hear a track with doubles and they sound so perfect...not singing i mean with rap for instance dmx his voice is so harsh sounding but then you hear it on a track and it sounds so full and soft sounding instead of hurting your ears. Ive tried the whole compression thing but sometimes it just makes it worse sounding to me, you think maybe a tube saturation could make a main vocal and a double vocal sound smoother together?

It depends of the artist, mic, mic placement...
and of course eq, compression.

Personally, I would cut the very high end (maybe 16khz+) little bit and try finding the harsh places in mid frequencies by sweeping. Then compress.
