- a big bag of capacitors. 100 Panasonic poly film caps, 1.8uF/250V. Digikey sent me these instead of the 27uF electros I ordered  and they didn't want them back    These could be handy for tube circuits or giant power supplies, I guess. One of these suckers is nearly as big as my mics (OK not quite, but you get the idea), so I can't use 'em. Paypal me $5 for shipping.

Digikey part # EF2185-ND

- a leftover matched pair of MSH-1As, free to somebody that doesn't have a pair of my mics  Not as high SPL as the new model, but lots of people still like 'em. Free ship 'cause the Paypal fee ain't worth you payin' me for it.

had to get that in there quick...I have been considering grabbing a pair of mics from you to give them a try....this could make it an easy decision...Id still buy a pair later...but this would be a great way to try them out...

yargh!!!
i'll soon be buyin some of ye mics then

Well . . . in the meantime, I still have a big bag of capacitors! :D

OK I have one more pair of 1As I found in the bottom of the box, these aren't matched, but they are free!

Just checked out your website. I see you have been busy building some cool accessories.

Someone better grab them mics fast or I will have to lie and say I don't have any.

awww man :(

Mics would be nice since I'm buying some equipment in a couple weeks but will have no nice/quality mics to use. I'd appreciate it...PM me or me PM you?

Fetusborg did ask second about the first pair, I had forgotten that. In fairness, they go to Fetusborg! PM me again please :)

I have a couple of prototype 1Ms, I'm not ready to let those go yet, but gunshyboy has dibs on those when I do (probably about a week). The 1Ms and 1As sound the same, the 1A was low output impedance and had a little more SPL handling, but most people won't notice a difference.

For those confused by my stream of model #s:

MSH-1: the original mic, omni, high output impedance, 110dBSPL. In production May-June 2006

MSH-1A: the first "active" version, low output impedance, 114dBSPL. Production from July-Aug 2006

MSH-1O: the current omni version, low output impedance, 122dBSPL. Production from Sept 2006 forward, no further revision planned.

MSH-1C: the cardioid version, tailored response, 126dBSPL (effectively higher at all frequencies outside of 1-2kHz). Production from Sept 2006 forward.

MSH-1M: a reissue of MSH-1, with some minor changes. It is handy for running off low-power sources, so I brought it back. Production Oct. 2006 forward.

MSH-4: an omni tube version, Production Aug 2006 forward

What happened to the 2 and 3? Well, the 3 is still on the drawing board. I set it aside for a while, now I'm thinking of doing it again, but I'll save the details until I am sure.

The 2 was the 1A, but I decided to call it the 1A as I was only selling on eBay back then and I worried that nobody would be looking for an MSH-2  I sent out 8 MSH-2s as test mics, and I made a minor tweak to the design before it became the 1A, so there are four people out there that can boast they have the most exclusive mic I've made ;)

so I will be getting the 1A's...What might I be interrested in micing with them? accoustic guitars? drums? vox????

I have 2 of the MHS-2's.. :D :D :D :D (i'm boasting) :D :D :D :D

Also a matched set of the MS-1's

Thanks for making some great stuff mshilarious.

since we're on the subject

I know, this should be in the mic forum, but since you brought it up, what would the response of the 1C be tailored to? You're cutting 1-2K, what does that correspond to?

And are there any plans for a cardioid tube?

And thanks for that chart. I was one of those confused by all the models.

It was tailored to "approximately the flattest response I could get while having some low end and not having ridiculous peaks from 3-4kHz and totally sucking". It is boosted from 1-2kHz, not cut.

The cardioid was an interesting adventure. Early on people asked for a cardioid for the rear rejection. Also, people wanted a cheap mic to throw on toms. The omni capsules, even with the high SPLs I finally extracted, were never going to fit the bill.

Even so, I resisted the pleas because the specs on the cardioid capsules never looked appealing to me: low sensitivity, very non-flat response, high noise.

But then when the Karma mic was pending, it was advertised as cardioid, so I figured I ought to get off my duff and do one too.

When I finished it (after testing dozens of vent sizes and patterns), I looked around for something for it to do. Quickly I realized it wasn't a directional version of the omni mic, the response was too tailored. Then I noticed its response was kinda similar to a D112 or B52 (I didn't tune it for the 4kHz peak, but I could, I know how). It doesn't have the extreme SPL handling, but when I beat the crap out of my skins, it sounded pretty good. So I figured it is my version of a dynamic mic.

What I like about it is it brings out the richness of the first few overtones of the toms, but gets out of the way before the cymbals come in. But then I use Remo Fiberskyns, so what do I know :o I have not had any feedback at all on the 1C, other than a few poor souls who really wanted 1Os and ordered 1Cs thinking they were similar. I think I did a bad job on the first version of the 1C copy, so I exchanged those quickly :o

And are there any plans for a cardioid tube?

No. It would sound different, first off, because the tube case size is larger, so the resonant peaks would change. I would have to experiment with drilling the much more expensive tube case, which is metal. Also the tube itself has limited SPL handling.

However I do have one more cardioid trick up my sleeve--it's my answer to my favorite mic of all time (I've already done my second favorite, the AT3060), the Green Bullet. It will be bandwidth limited response combined with a distortion circuit, all in a Neutrik connector. Oh yeah, it will be green, too :D Who would want that? Well, me, for one ;)

And thanks for that chart. I was one of those confused by all the models.

It confuses me too. I didn't plan the early days too well. I had no idea how popular these things would get :o

let me know next time you have free stuff. im on a extremly low budget, so anything will help. I was going to try to make one of your mics, But i was to lazy. And I had to search around for parts. keep in touch
