Free Recording Software?

I saw a post here a few months ago regarding someone's experience with some free downloadable recording/sequencing software. Does anyone know of some semi-decent ones to play around with? And where to go to download them? This would be for use with a Fostex MR-8. Any suggestions would be appreciated ... and thanks! :D
 
Kristal audio engine is a good start.
The one thats hot right now is reaper.
Samplitude has a limited version for $50 -that is a deal,considering what the older versions cost.
google these,download em & see what you like.
 
If you're doing the recording on the fostex Id recommend Audacity for editing. I've found Kristal a bit gay for editing. And reaper is unstable.
 
Thanks for the replies! I think it was Audacity that was mentioned before. I will give it a shot. Any others out there?
 
I believe there's one called Quartz or something...limited to four tracks..it might just be a demo, but if I recall correctly it's not

Ahh apparently its a freeware version of a commercial software
 
'Ben playin around with the audacity thing ... not too bad. See, I have a pirated version of Cakewalk Home Studio from my band-mate who BOUGHT it JUST so we could trade files over instant messaging (oh man, I'm sorry to all those that are making a gajillion dollars from your wonderful software ...) and I started this thread for a friend of mine who wants to go legit. And now I kinda wanna do it, too. How can we trade files and not have to shell out $500 bucks a piece? We are the future ... music made over the super-highway!

Quartz Audio Master FREE is 4 stereo tracks + 16 GM/GS/VG MIDI --- very EZ to use. Comes with 4 FX
Can re-config screen layouts. Controls look like cassette recorder.

Reaper is worth a look, new updates coming every few days at the moment, I find it very stable, still free at the moment.
