Mixing and Mastering.
Anyone ever found free recording (and mixing) software that is actually any good? I downloaded Audacity and Kristal yesterday and they both suck soo badly. Audacity cant process effects in real time!!! and they are both really slow to use graphics and audio wise.
Is there any free software that is good??

N-track is practically free. The demo is fully functional and has no time limit. Was $35 to buy when I got it. I use it on my laptop and it's excellent. Uses VST and DX plugs in real time. I use the 24 bit version, which I think cost an additional $35 or so over the 16 bit version.

There's Ardour, but you've gotta be a major Linux (or OS X) geek to use it.

BTW, I use Audacity all the time. While I agree that the lack of realtime effects is a pain, overall the program is fantastic as long as you don't try to push it too far beyond its capabilities (i.e., it's not really designed to be a multitracker).

Pro Tools Free, only if you are running Windows 98/ME though.....

I had Pro Tools Free, but my soundcard couldnt handle it. I just bought a new soundcard yesteday and now when i try and install Pro Tools Free I dont get the .exe file.
Any way that I could upload Pro Tools Free from you as uncompressed files rather than the installation file?

Meanwhile im gonna try out N-tracks demo. Im just gagging to try out my new soundcard.

I tried n-tracks, at first I thought it was cool, but you still have to use an external wave editor. Also the real it has alot of bugs and crashes randomly. Honestly check out Adobe Audition. It is cheeper then most and in my experience the most stable and usable.

just my 2 cents

Cheers Spaztic, will try out Adobe audition demo also if there is one. Thing is though I use Windows ME and im sure some programmes dont work for ME.

I've had great success with Tracktion. It's pretty cheap, $150 ish, and easy to use. I haven't tried the new version, which sounds even better. (The old one I use is pretty wanky on the midi tip.)

Of course, the open source stuff like Audacity will one day be as good anything...open source just takes time.

I've recently downloaded KRISTAL from http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/

16 tracks purely recording. No MIDI though. The next version will include this thoug apparently. They are going commercial however with the next release.

The demo says my operating system has not been modified so it cannot install Adobe Audition. weird thing is im sure it said on the demo that it supports all operating systems.

Maybe you need to uninstall these programs first.

drop ME, get XP, you'll be happy you did, as everything will run better, ha.
