OK....so I am now well under way putting this beast together and I needed to replace the mouse port/slot/cabel thing because the mobo plug is "5 pins wide" and I can only fit a "4 pins wide" plug because of these little stupid transformers or chokes or something on the mobo......(breath).......

so I go to my local Shop and find I have to "modify" the plug, which I was gonna do in the first place.......

BUT, while I'm there I pick up an inexpensive used Maxtor 2.5G 5400rpm hard drive to use as my "boot drive" as I will have a 7200 40G Maxtor for my "audio drive" because THEY say that is the way to go.

I read some where that optimal set up for audio DAW is to have:

small "boot" disk = Primary Master
CDR drive = Primary Slave

large "storage" disk = Secondary Master
CD rom drive = Secondary Slave

QUESTION 1 : Is this correct?????

QUESTION 2 : with 2 IDE controllers and 4 drives stacked

.....................................CDR in large bay
.....................................CD Rom in large bay
.....................................2.5G disk in small bay
.....................................40G disk in small bay

from top to bottom, how do you connect the cabels without tangling and are there cabels with the "drive plugs" spaced far nough apart to successfully do this??????( mine are not)

QUESTION 3 : Do the jumperes assign the default value of the device (as in Primary Master or Secondary Slave) or can that be adjusted in the BIOS or Devise Manager???????

I'm not sure of the jumper settings for the CD rom (used) or the 2.5G disk (used).

Any help will help.

I'm such a joneser that I just want to give all my parts to "the computer people" to put together but I should learn about this stuff and not remain reliant on the "people who sell me stuff" to
do it for me after telling me that I have to upgrade everything or it just wont work.

Thanks

Hi Mike,
It does'nt really matter about the disk size, I use 2 40g 7200 matching HD's.
Your right on your HD config.
Set up your CD player as your master and CDR as slave, although it may not matter either way.
Stack the 2 CD's on top one another to get them as close together as possible and do the same for the HD's.
The standard ribbon cables will have 3 connects. 1 at the end for the Mobo and 2 close together at other end which will tie to both HD's. Same for the CD's.
The connect at end will go to primary and middle connect to secondary. Sometimes you have to bend em up a little to get em situated.
The pin settings, if not on displayed on the drives can probobly be found at the manufactures website.

Thanks......but.....??

....but shouldn't I have the each of the hard disks on a different IDE controllers since the smaller one will be running the apps (and the OS) and the other will be doing the data transfer (i.e. recording/playing back)?????.

I want to have uninterrupted access to both disks at the same time.
Each IDE controller can only controll one device at a time continuously, right??

It does make total sense to have the burner as slave though because I have the HD and/or ROM drive to read FROM and the Burner will always be read TO.

But now I just confused myself........

So what is the optimal device assignments for a 2 HD and 2 CD setup????????
I did power "Frankie" up though, without the smaller drive installed yet just to make sure the ports and VGA hooks ups were pluged in correctly.

Vwah-lah........we have a pulse..........the lips moved.........the

eyes flickered open.......its.......

.........ITS>>>>>>>>>>

........ITS got an error message......

Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

Well at least I got the monitor working....
