Hi Ive just bought an x-26 but there is no manual with it. Does anyone have a spare manual or know where i can get one from? thanks alot, Mike.

I "think" I have one of those at home. I'll check tonight and I can probably scan it or something.

I've got one...If Mindcore doesn't get to his in time I'll try to find the time to scan it for you...Fostex, in their infinite moron-ness, has decided that their old gear is "obsolete", and won't supply manual downloads for anything they don't currently manufacture...They lost any chance of ever selling me another effin' thing...

I agree. Man, it is not like the extra space to store some .pdf files is going to kill their website. And since the gear is obsolete, there probably isn't going to be that many downloads! :(

Man, the first 4-Track cassette I owned was a Fostex X-26. I actually made a little money recording demo's for bands with that sucka!

No shit. I've gotten downloads for manuals going back almost 40 years (a boat motor manual from a early 70's 6 horse, for one). The least they could do would be to provide a link to a site that could store and supply the old paperwork--Hell, even Alesis does...

Heh yeah, me too (except the money-makin' part)...I still have mine, it looks good, but is having issues--I think the heads are out of alignment, but Fostex says the unit is obsolete, so what's the use of sending it to a tech?

Eric

I came across a CD of my old band way back in the day that I made off that X-26, I was acually shocked how good it sounded all things considered. I hasten to say I don't think I've gotten much better since I was 15..

Anyways, I just stopped home for lunch, found the unit, but not the manual, its not in the box. I'll have to start a search party tonight.

A tape head alignment is a simple proceedure that just about any bench tech can perform.

What might be a problem is the tape heads might be wore out! In that case, you probably will have to junk the unit as I am about 90% sure Fostex is NOT make replacement parts for that unit! :( But, maybe some stock is still laying around somewhere. I wouldn't even know how to go about finding that out.

I cannot tell you if it is worth it to have a bench tech check it out. Usually, their minimum fee is around $40-60. If they can fix the unit, they count that towards the labor. But, if it turns out the heads are shot, you are out that money.

Yeah! I remember the reason I bought mine is because it would play back pretty much the same sound I was listening to while recording or in a "record enabled" mode.

All the junky Tascams always sounded VERY different on playback! And usually, it wouldn't sound as good. Frustrating.

Ah, but Ford Van, my friend, I am NOT a bench tech...The heads record quite well, and play back quite well...But the tapes they produce, on ANY other deck, sound like shit through a sieve...Real muddy, and to make them intelligable at all I have to take out ALL the low and jack the highs all the way up...But on the X-26 everything sounds great...Including store-bought pre-recorded stuff...My non-bench tech self sez "heads are out of alignment..."

...But I could be wrong... :)

Eric

Well, you can have those heads aligned by anybody that does work on cassette decks I am pretty sure.

Call around and see who is close by that will do it.

Mike,

I looked everwhere man, I can't find the manual. Sorry.

I'm sure I'll come across it eventually, if you still need it, I'll pm you.

Thanks alot for trying anyway. Is the offer still on for scanning yours Stetto? I would really apprecitate it. If you do scan it would you send it to itshutchy@hotmail.com. thanks alot Mike.

Hey Mike, check yer mail...

Oh, and I converted it to a pdf. file. Hope you have Adobe...

Eric

BTW, thanks for makin' me get around to scanning this. Eventually the hardcopy is gonna disintegrate, cheap ricepaper it's printed on...Now I have insurance...

So, what then, no "thanks", "no thanks", acknowlegement of reciept or even "kiss my ass"?

I spent some time scanning that rag for ya pal, at least let me know that ya got the damn thing...

Eric
