CAN SOMEONE TELL ME OR DIRECT ME ON HOW THE ADAT OPTICAL DIVICE IS USED IS IT A SET OF CABLES OR IS IT ANOTHER DEVICE I NEED TO PURCHASE...

Optical Out

cscudder,

The optical out (a small squarish hole that may have a cover on it if you've never used it before)just needs an optical cord that you can pickup at any decent music store or a place like Best Buy (They even have them at Walmart). This would connect from your optical out to the optical in of your ADAT. Then, you would go into the setup on the 8 and tell it to send your digital out throught the "light pipe". At that point, you can record or save to your ADAT. It'll do 8 channels at a time.

Many ADAT possibilities

Scudder,
ADAT is used by more digital devices than about anything else, except maybe SPDIF. Many sound cards(Pulsar, RME Hamerfall, etc.) mixers, and recorders use ADAT. Do some searching. If you want to use the PC for processing, check out the RME site and choose a card. All digital signals must be syncd, and sometimes syncing will happen with an ADAT cable and other times you need to add a BNC cable.
If you buy a VR800, get it without the HD and install it yourseld. Check out Fostex digital mixers, also ADAT.

How do we know whether sync is from ADAT?
The VR800 use's word clock to scynec to the mixer (VM200)
so what will sync to the computer if the card has word clock

Terry,
I have two Pulsar cards/ TAD-IF TDIF-ADAT converter/ TASCAM TMD-1000 Digital Mixer. A Pulsar rep told me I needed a Pulsar sync cable. I set Pulsar to 44,100 at 24bit. Then I set the TMD to "word sync in" at 24bit and 44,100. It synced up fine using ADAT only. Will it always work? The answer to that question is what makes PC recording so frustrating. The answer is maybe.
As I find time to try to send D824 ADAT tracks into my PC, I'll post my results.

do you have to have an 8 track adat to make this work, or will a 2 channel adat machine work with the vr800

I think all toslink light pipe cables are 8 audio tracks at 48K or two spdif tracks, which ever you choose. spdif or ADAT will sync. You just need to set your computer interface to autosync(for RME) or external sync. Or the card as master may work. Try different settings. This is an old old thread. I have RME multiface and Samplitude Pro now. I'm getting a Yamaha i88x interfaced soon. The Fostex D824 still works great. I think it records violins better than a computer. Not so shrill, just sweet.
