hello-

i just got a Fostex VF80 (with out the cd-r/cd-rw drive)
i have tons and tons of questions.. but here are two main ones

How do i transfer my music to my computer or something so i can burn it on a disc?- do i need software? what should i use? i have access to Pro Audio 9 from Cakewalk?-

What is the best way to hook up a mixer to it? just take the tape out on the mixer and plug it into the guitar inputs? i need to use a mixer for recording the drums-

My budget is zero.. as in I need to make this stuff work
thank you

Some possibilities...

You could use the L/R monitor outputs and go via your computer's soundcard into the PC... And you can use the mixer as you say. There may be other ways, but I can't tell since I don't know what other outputs your mixer has.

Ouch! Kind of defeats the purpose of digital recording...

Without the CD burner, you can transfer tracks in the digital domain, two at a time, if you have a sound card with S/P DIF.

(No intention of starting another flame war, but this is exactly why some folks are so passionate about the MR-8. In the original user's case, if he has no S/P DIF sound card, and he stated his budget is gone - there's no way to get those tracks into a computer short of recording the mix into his sound card. Just something people researching these things to be aware of.)

hey thank you for your replys-
i see now how it wouldn't be digital
but i have another question

you can save things in .wav file on the 8-track
would this be a possible and good way- or would would this be a bad way of doing things?
my idea was to take out the drive of the recorder- change it to slave and hook it up to my computer.. and then just burn the tracks from there..?
would that work? would i mess anything up? i already have a second drive installed on my computer and know a little bit about that stuff? the hard drive in the recorder is very easy to take out.. and it wouldn't bother me to take my computer apart a couple of times..
what do you all think?
thanks

sorry i was a little mistaken - you can't save .wav files on your hard drive of the recorder- so now what do i do?
would a MIDI conection be digital? or not? cause i have midi cables and what not for computer?
what program would be best?
need some help!
anybody?
somebody?

thanks

mrx - yes, you're exactly right.

So saffron the answer for you is either an SPDIF equipped sound card which is what I use (and you need a decent soundcard for monitoring anyway) or the rip off priced CD burner.

MIDI is not relevant - that doesn't carry audio data, just a set of instructions.
