Fostex VF-160 - Did I make a mistake?

Hi all,

I just bought a VF-160 less than a month ago. I have been able to record some stuff but the more I use it or even look at it I wonder if I made the right choice. The manual SUCKS! Any tips or helpful hints are welcome.

Question - why does my mixdown (and burned cd) sound so low? How do I correct that?

The forum there has alot of great people willing to help. And yes, the manual sux but it makes more sense once you start getting the hang of it.

When internally mixing down a tune on the VF-160, you really have to crank those tracks up or you are going to loose alot of volume. Many of us transfer tracks from the VF 160 to a recording progam on PC or Mac mainly because of all the plugin options you have with a recording program. That is not to say that you can't make a great finished product on the VF 160. I've heard many. It just takes time and work no matter what DAW that you are using.

The learning curve on the VF 160 is definately no worse than a Yamaha and definately easier than any Roland.

Thank you so much for your respomse, CR. What recording programs do you use on your pc if any? I have Cakewalk, Voyetra and i also have MusicMatch but er... im not good with any of the first two.
 
Dave - n-Track is a big favourite around here. Tried it myself and found out why. Dump your VF tracks into it and you're flying:)

Yes, like Garry said, n-Track, it's very easy to use. http://fasoft.com/main.shtm

I have it and I also have PG Music PowerTracks Pro Audio 8. http://pgmusic.com/powertracks.htm I got it last year and it comes with a load of free plugins and most of them work great with n-Track too.

Thanks guys - I guess by what CR said I should be happy with my "toy" (that's what my friends call it) - I will look into those progams you mentioned as well.
 
mixdown and cd volume-vf160

The manual will drive you crazy, but I've found that I gained enough knowledge through experimenting to rarely need to open the book. Once your at that stage, the manual begins to make sense.
I use the internal compressor to get the added volume I need for mixdown and burning. If your volumes are carefully balanced, a touch of added compressor volume goes a long way and still leaves you a clean signal.
