I am strongly considering buying the Fostex VF-16, but I am concerned about the 16 bit rate and the possibility of not being able to use a stand alone cdr with it.

Any input from current or past Fostex VF-16 users would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel

16 bit rate

Dekko,

I have never had a complaint about the CD's I have burned from my VF-16. It is CD quailty. I use a Philips 770 to burn them direct from the VF-16. It sounds great!
I am sure there are many that will agree........

I agree

I think the VF-16 sounds great. There is a difference between 16 bit and 24 bit machines but only an audio pro is going to hear it. Your regular joe will never be able to tell the difference, and wouldn't really give a shit if he could, it sounds that good. To my ears anyway!!

While you can't hook a CD-R up to the SCSI connection (well, actually you can now but only for backup purposes) you can hook one up to the SPDIF digital outs, so you do have the ability to record directly to a stand alone CD-R. From what I've read of it the Alesis Masterlink looks like a GREAT option for this, my old guitar instructor uses the Masterlink and he loves it. I run my VF-16 into my computer and Master/record to CD-R from there so that's not a concern for me.

Check out the song 10000 miles, it was recorded on a VF-16. I think it sounds pretty good (not my recording) and that's an MP-3. Imagine how good the original .Wav file sounded!!

Also keep in kind this was the persons first real recording. I think they did a great job, especially for a first try.
