Fostex VF 16 and Cakewalk

The menu system isn't too bad on the VF- I've seen worse. In fact I think it's one of the easiest to get your head round. The preamps aren't wonderful, for soem mics (like SM58) you have to have the gain almost at ten to get a decent level.
Still, for the money...
