any reviews of this product for recording vocals? this is our first purchase to try to do home recording. any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm in the same boat. But it was your post that brought me to this great BBS and sign up stuff. I had a little extra cash and thought that the Fostex MR-* was going to be my one purchase combined with the desktop that would get me up and running. Boy was I wrong! First off this box aint cheap. Secondly I think ya need an electrical engineer's degree to understand a good half of the instructions. And thirdly (most importantly for me) there doesnt seem to be a way to play live through the box to the computer. Or I've even more blind then the doctors said. I like the flash card and the USB factors very much and hope that as soon as I get my "Fostex degree" I'll be doing a lot better.

The MR 8 is a stand alone recorder. There is no reason to have that AND a computer at the same time. Sounds like what you were looking for is a computer interface.
(thats not to say you wouldnt want to record a bunch of tracks then mix them down to the computer, but if you want to go straight to your computer, you bought the wrong thing)

You're gonna have to get a mixer or some other kind of mic pre to do vocals or record with a mic. The pre's are just too weak in the Mr8. It is a nice first standalone though. If you're interested, I'm gonna be selling my mr8 along with ub802 mixer along with a mic,cable, etc. for pretty cheap as like whole home studio package.
