I am a newbie looking for my first DWS. Can anyone compare the 3 for me ... more specifically and importantly any major minues of any of them that might have me wishing I didn't buy it?

I am a guitarist that just wants to do home studio demos, and already have amp sim / effects / DI, drum machine, bass synth, sequencer capability, so those elements are not a requirement and probably a waste for me. For what I need I do not need more than 2 tracks of simultaneous record (but 4 would be nice). Ease of use is important as is easy portability to PC for CD burning.

I am looking to get something new / used for under $400 and something easy / fast to use (i.e. not cumbersome menus, etc). Should I be looking at these only? What else (the new Fostex MR-8 ?). Or will I end up just being dissapointed and I should find a way to dig deeper into the wallet for a HD based recorder like the Fostex VF-80 ... or what other choices / other ?

Thanks !

The Korg is just higher quality, than the others. Akai has a 12 in the same price range for 400.00 at shreve audio.

If you're going in for a console, from 4-track to a VS2480, get over the idea that you're not going to have cumbersome menus, you just will. And you're new manual will be written in a special language called "Japanics". You'll get through it. I use a VS1824CD for small-time studio work, but when I travel, My little Korg 4-tracker is a constant companion. I haven't really studied current 8-trackers, but there was a recent detailed thread. I don't have the link, try the search function. Best of luck.-Richie

Get a Korg D8. Stick a 4 gig laptop drive in it. Easy to use - not much, if any, harder than a portastudio. Great sound. Optical out ( S/PDIF ) for a soundcard. Only 2 inputs at a time though. Effects are pretty good. Great starter machine. But, you'll wish you had more than 8 tracks pretty quickly. No experience with the other machines. I wouldn't get anything that records to Zip disks if I were you. Check out the storage options on all the machines - that's one of the biggest issues. And.....the D8 is obsolete. You won't get any customer support from Korg. And no operating system updates. Good luck with the search. I've really enjoyed my D8. Probably going for the D1600 next year sometime.

Its the 2 input thing that the makes that D8 bad.

that akai 12 has 6 inputs.
