I have a choice between these two recorders, no matter of money value, but the quality of recording, ease of use and reliability. Please, help needed, any idea is welcome!

688, maybe a bit less fidelity (depends on mixer used with the fostex) but wins on most points.

Back in the 80's I worked in a studio that used an A8 daily, that thing was a real workhorse that never needed any repairs in the 6 years I worked there (except for a new remote).

I recently got a 688. I must say that the computer (where all routing is done) is kind of a PITA, and the mixer is pretty noisy on mine, but in general it sounds absolutely great.

It by far, and i mean FAR, exceeded all of my expectations when it comes to the recording quality. I really didn't know what to expect from 8 tracks on cassette. The tape hiss is very minimal and the thickness/texture of the sound is fantastic. The only difference to me between recording on this versus my Fostex E16, or some of the Otari machine's I've used is the level at which I hit the tape during recording. The cassette goes into distortion a lot sooner/easier than my Fostex or the Otari 1/2" 8 tracks and 1/4" two tracks I've used. There just seems to be a bit less headroom, but the DBX is so good that recording at lower levels for tracks that need more headroom for dynamics doesn't cause unacceptable levels of hiss.

It's just awesome to have a completely self contained, tape based recording setup that syncs with all my midi stuff. I make electronic music so sync is an absolute requirement for me to multitrack my gear, overdub, etc. It works perfectly and simply with all of my sequencers that accept midi clock.
