Fostex 8051 Footswitch for Punch Ins?

I just found out about this footswitch for doing punch ins and got one. I've found a few threads on here mentioning it, but not much info.

I'm assuming one could use any ol' footswitch instead? I have a "clicking" type one, but I thought I'd be better off springing for the Fostex one which I assume is silent.

Any thoughts on punching in and out? I'm recording guitar for the most part, mostly acoustic. I would love to think I could play a piece all the way through perfectly, but on the other hand, to get 90% and then screw up would be a drag.
 
I use a JHS branded pedal which is very similar to the Boss design. I think it's meant for guitar amps. It's quiet. You can use any pedal which is 'momentary action, normally open' (that is non-latching, and closes the circuit when you press it).

The wrong kind of pedal can cause problems at start-up.

I'd go with the Fostex model. It's heavy duty and works like a charm. I now consider it essential equipment. The punches are truly seamless, never a click, almost hard to believe.

What you do is arm the track for recording. Then hit play (not play and record). When you get near the spot, punch the pedal and the record mode goes on, and vice-versa... The only trick is to keep your levels even across the punch in/out.
 
Billisa has nailed it. I agree 100%...........I use mine on a Fostex D160.

Thanks all, I'm glad I got the Fostex model. Good point about the levels, Billisa, that's something that could make or break a punch in.

The beauty is if you make a mistake, or it's just not as perfect as you'd like, just hit the UNDO button and do it over. No worries.
