Damned if I do
OK, I've finally gotten around to trying Reaper and so far I'm liking it. Seems solid and stable. Good features, decent plug-ins included.

It does seem similar to Vegas, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to set up aux f/x sends. Is this even possible? Or do all f/x have to be track based?

I must be missing something. Either that or Reaper is. So what's the deal?

Just send the audio to another track, tracks can be sends, returns, folders, etc. When sending it to another track you can select if the send is pre fx if that is what you want. The routing scheme is endless, enough so you could create feedback loops.

Of course I could be miss understanding what you want to actually do.

Like SRR said, throw out the restrictive, locked up paradigm of most audio apps

Think of reaper as a patch bay. Send your signal anywhere with virtual cables, and feel free to treat auxes the same way you would treat a regular channel, with all the options that entails. In fact you have no choice, any AND all channels at all times can be tracks, aux sends, aux recieves, busses, and can do all the functions at the same time

It can be helpful sometimes to click : View\Routing Matrix. If you are an RME user this thing will be immediately apparent but if not, just click the send channel to the recieve channel in the graph.

Remember, in REAPER EACH send can independantly be pre/post fx, pre/post volume and can do dual mono, follow pan or independant pan

Also, each channel has 64 internal channels for functions like sidechaining and parallel routing, and any of these can be sent on to or recieved from other channels as well

In addition, all VST's in Reaper have input and output choosers for Y cord type functions if needed

Sounds way more complicated than it really is...a little out of date, but see video #5

Well, nearly free. 30-day free evaluation period, then $40 for a license after that. Still a great deal.
