Clear Type is a new font technology that is included within Windows XP. It is designed to make text on laptop & LED screens easier to read; however some people like it on CRT monitors as well.
Microsoft has a web page set up where you can go to enable/disable Clear type and experiment with different Clear type settings. When you get a chance give it a test drive, you find that it improves your "laptop experience". Or it may not.
