I'm not going to give my opinion on the music, because hell - you guys haven't heard my stuff yet , but because I'm from a "rock/guitar based" background, when I listen to R&B/Hip Hop from people on these boards I never know how much is found loops and what have you and how much is being written/played. If it's loops from a CD or whatever, then the only "real" production work is on the vocals, right?

no, seriously: I do a lot of midi-stuff because I don't have a band and no room. so this is one of the reasons why my stuff sounds acceptable. there's a lot more work to do working with a real drums set, real pianos. and you will have to get more or less expensive equipment and a lot of knowledge and experience to get these instruments' very tone onto tape.

so I make it a bit easier for myself by using midi in combination with soundfonts (basically very short samples of single notes). and I know: it's just not the real thing. so I wouldn't call myself a good producer.

using samples in the "hip hop meaning" of samples... well... if now someone says "it sounds ok but the vocals are just a bit crappy" this would mean the same as a comment like "wow, throw it away" on a "real" production.

anyway - my rule of thumb that I've figured out is: a production gets harder by the factor of 1.5 or so for every sound source that's added.

so what do you have there? 1 sample-cd and some vocalists?

Recording that kind of music is so much simpler than recording instruments for rock/jazz/blues/etc. And before you launch into a tirade - I record rock and hiphop - so I think Im qualified to have my opinion. IOW, comparing a SUV and Motorcycle on gas mileage isnt a fair comparison

Well, everything is relative. Listened to 'Your Girlfriend'. If you like it, that's what matters. It would be interesting if someone on this board with a top drawer setup recorded one of your songs so that we could compare.

gear paranoia

i think too many newbies get paranoid about gear.
i like to experiment with cheap gear. ive picked up all sorts of cheap gear for 5 to 10 bucks. using elite gear has no magic for me. ive been there done that. several of my songs done on my site soundclick.com/bmanning used elite gear and many used junk.
my approach is - i know i have failings - even after 25 yers
recording - but i approach each new song the same way.
i just do the best i can. but once the song is finished . thats it.
time to write another song. i think this is a healthier approach
than agonising over everything which would probably drive me crazy.
My theory is everything has a sound even a 20 dollar mic.
I used a 20 dollar mic on "woohoo" thats had lots of plays.
"take my love" used top range ultra expensive mics.
is there really that much difference ? i dont think so.
i challenge anyone to tell me which of my songs used junk gear versus elite gear.
ive learnt one thing. so you fail on a particular song ?
well you pick yourself up and go on. but occassionally
i get a bit of magic occurring like the lead guitar breaks on "hide me" or the lunacy of "H lady" or "limeyrap" or the doubled vocals that folks like on "hi tech man" or my london town song.
ive found "magic" can occur with cheap equipment though
just as easily as with expensive. "magic" is why i keep on doing it.
it just makes me happy.

the sound effects in "your girlfriend" sound like my windows xp fish aquarium screen saver LOL!! hey im fairly new at this too and if your like me youll more than likely spend more money on gear the more you get into it, but yeah ill agree with you it sounds fair for what youve got in it. i love music and i love making music but i love my family too, so i cant go and dump a ton of money on stuff just for my music!!! some of these guys dont understand that but the most of them will help you ALOT(theres always a cheaper solution) but you gotta be ready for honest reviews.

good for what you working with

for the lil bit of equipment you mentioned, the mixing and mastering is good. your songs sound good artistically anyway, could sound better sonically(with better equipment and). im serious bout the artistic element, yall prolly want to step it up as far as mixing and mastering, cuz it seems you've already mastered the level your at. im new to this, so take it with a grain of salt. i know wut sounds good to me though and wuts pleasing to the ear. your tunes are pleasing to the ear, keep it up.
