Our singer/guitarist/songwriter came by today to try out some new ideas. Here's the result.

Drums: Fruity Loops from hell
Guitars: Roland GP100
Bass: Line Box of Doom -> Mackie
Vox: Line Audio SM3 through dbx576
Recorded on Delta Audiophile / Cool Edit Pro wif Waves plugs

cheers!

I have it playing right now. Shit, that just sounds good. When the hard section kicks in it just makes me smile. GREAT sound. It's hard for me to believe those are Fruity drums. First class all the way around.

cool tune, very good lyrics. I like when it gets heavier, that's a good vocal melody, but the guitar sound was not as pleasing in that part.............though I liked it anyway.

good tune though, I played it 3 times. good mood to it also.

cool

I think redoing that section of the break at 1:36 - 1:59 to be
a quieter version of the same thing would set up the great electric guitar lines that follow. Maybe the song needs to be 23 seconds longer... :)

You certainly got this bugger friggin LOUD and never got over -0.9dB on my meters.

Great job.

whaz up....Good song...Good drums from the frooty looper

I just thought that the electric guitar had too much high end distortion for my tastes...just my opinion.

Good song though, and good recording too

Ok, now to what I want to know....How did you get that song so damn loud man....I just compared it to the song I'm working on and felt like throwing my computer out the window....How is that done? Damn that pisses me off that ...:)

My software compression doesn't seem to do the job...I need to understand this....How do you do that w/o sending your stuff off to a mastering madman....or are you a mastering madman? :D

Groovy, great stuff. Sounds semi-80'ish, duranish.. but cool.

Nice job!

yeah....kinda "semi-80ish" .... kinda like the program that came on right after Miami Vice:D :D :D

seriously....it does jump right into the tune...and the gtrs are a tad harsh...and it does sound like duran d...

I guess it was loud...didn't seem so much, comparitively so....

very nice effort for the day.
I thought the fruit loops sounded just fine, too....better than the Capn' Crunch;)

I must add. The bass is great!. Nice tone, playing aggressive, on the beat.

Hey, nice work.

I love the clarity of this track. ITs not mad loud like the previous one. THe vocal sound contrasts with the clarity, being a bit dull

I wish the distor guit could have been panned harder for a bigger sound.

funk on!

*blush*

ALRIGHT! More CocoCasa!

I'm curious about a couple of things in this song...
  1. How are you getting that bass tone? There's a... "burp" at the beginning of each significant beat, and as a crappy ass bass player, I'm clueless...
  2. How do you mic your drums? They're always distinct, but not IN YOUR FACE. I can dig that.
  3. Who's the backup on the "I like to be alone," etc?
  4. You have strings/synths at the beginning of the song, but it feels as if they drop out as the song progresses (2:24's phrase could be reinforced with them).
  5. The backing guitar @ 1:12 is becoming a CocoCasa signature sound. Did you know this? Is this planned, or just the default playing style of one of the guitarists?
  6. 2:00 deserves a break of sorts. "...I'm still waaaaasted." Ok, GET WASTED. Make that break into a short melodic-progressive orgasm, maybe keeping one or two of the melody lines and changing the bass so that the chord progression does your thing.
  7. I saw "Requiem For A Dream" the other day. When Leto says, "You gotta cut that stuff loose," I about shit my shorts.
  8. There's something about 1:30 that sounds a bit "off." I have no idea what it is, although the impression my ears are giving the brain says mp3-treble shredding (probably the .mp3, as opposed to the .wav). With your .wav, do you hear that?
  9. You, too, can be a reverb-a-holic. On this slower song, I catch a need for some heavy 'verb. Industrial style stuff. You know... wasted!

More comin'? Lookin' forward to it, y'all do GREAT work!

    :D

Emeric is right, the bass lines really kill on this track! Is that you playing? It's so cool that the vocal line and the bass line are the same much of the verse. Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order does that a lot.

I also like that the bass don't just follow the root tone on the chorus. And the bass moving upwards when the vocal and guitar are moving downwards is pretty ingenious. I had some difficulty identifying the chords, which can be a very cool thing. (Is it Dmaj7, C#/F, A, E - Dmaj7, C#/F, F#m, D/A?). It's a bit Radiohead'ish I think (I like Radiohead).

Personally I try to keep the choruses simple harmonically speaking, and rather put colorations and the bass not only playing the root in the verses. This keeps the listener's focus on the vocals in the choruses. You have pretty much done the opposite here, and I have to say I think it works well. Maybe I should get out of my box?

One thing to keep in mind though, some colorations, like maj7 chords, tend to not come through in a very good way when played on a distorted guitar. It sort of gets too much.

I also very much liked the atmospheric feel in the verses. The guitars are well arranged, and support and fill out the vocals in a great way (like after the "I like to be alone" phrases). Otherwise, I pretty much agree with most of the previous comments. Didn't like the guitar sound of the chorus too much, it could use some more meat and less top end. Should have less drive to make it more grainy. Drums were cool, and the bass sound was too. I really liked how the fret noise comes through without being obtrusive.

The vocal sound appeared a little dull (just listening through headphones, mind you). Is that you singing, or your singer? I get the feeling the song, particularly the chorus, could benefit from being in a somewhat higher key. Do you think he/you can sing that?

Yet another great job, Meshuggah!

Oooops, forgot the drums were fruity.

Still don't get the bass thing, though. Technique?

cool song, and nice mixing.
The snare gives the fruityloops away (not that it matters). Its pretty hard not to though. I never had any luck with snare timing in fruityloops. But I did play around with the pitch on the snare and kick to kind of tune the drums a bit. I know it sounds weird but to get that - boom boom sock, boom boom sock - sound the drums have to be in tune. Not that yours are not in tune, now im just starting to rave on.

cool song...

Yikes.. Guess I've got some answering to do...

1. The bass is recordeed through a no-name DI into the Mackie (low cut, +2db Hi, -2db@250, +2bd Lo). Signal from the bass (Washburn XB-400) is equal doses of neck and bridge. I play with my thumb on the neck-pickup with a pretty aggressive playing-style. Then it's run 2 times through Waves L1+ with a treshold @ -3db, 10ms release. Yup... that's all... That Washburn bass ROXX!!

2. The mix is run 3 times through Waves L1+ with a treshold @ 2.2db, release 10ms

3. Guitars in the chorus is my standard heavy metal sound. And y'all have a good point that it's a bit harsh w/o any real 'meat' to it.. I'll have a look at that.. maybe re-recording, maybe EQ...

4. Duran Duran wtf... I smack you silly face.. ;) :D

5. I'm really glad you like the drums... They're all Waves L1+ too.. haha.. what would I do w/o Waves L1+ ???

6. The plugins used are: Waves Rverb, Waves RCL, Waves L1+ and Waves 2-tap Stereo-Delay.

7. After 2.23, it's not nearly finished.. I'd guess the song will come out ~5 minutes. This 'preview' contains all it's elements tho (I think).

To Kelly..
- The 'strings/synths' are the Guitar through the GP100...
- The '1.12 guitar' is well... heh.. we get chicks wif those guitars.. can't leave them out... :P
- The 'waaaaaaaaaasted' part is already DRENCHED in echos..
- I do the backing on "I like to be alone" :D
- hehehehe... you still remember my hit 'my_mom_is_a_dopefiend'? :D

To Henrik...
Oh.. I think it's F#m, E, Bm, D, E.... I have no clue.. We've never picked our songs apart... just try shit out 'til it sounds good... :)

I think we can't go higher in the chorus.. It was a bit tricky as is..

And the vox.. I like the sound a lot, xept the SSSSSS-sounds...

Big thanks to you all for listening... I'll keep you posted about when we get further with the song. :) :) :)

Update...
Guitars in the chorus are replace with warmer sounding guitars.. Thanks for pointing that out.. Big improvment.

Waves De-esser is a lovely tool... Vocals are GREAT now...

Hey, Meshuggah -- nice work. The overall mix is really solid. Everything in it's place. I really liked the backbeat stuff on the drums. I need to spend some time with Fruity Loops. I'd agree that the guitar is a bit crispy. If you could fatten it up, it'd really make that section pop. Overall, I'd like to hear it a little fuller in the low end, but it might just be my crappy CPU speakers... Good tune as well, nice and melodic!

:D

I agree, it needs more reverb.

I also noticed you sqashed it three times with l1. The ultramzximizer has a way of flattening mixes.

Still a great mix nonetheless.

edit: did you add some highs to the vox? or am I just hearing different. It sounds awesome like this.

Heh.. I think I have used MUCH reverb on this one as is... Reverb is cheesy.

and.. you're hearing different... all edits made are only on my computer as of yet.. (working on it as I write..)

Thanks for taking your time Cyan.. I really appreciate your comments.

Hmmm...come to think of it, it's VERY Duran Duran.

:D :D :D LOL

Never mind what friggin chords you use in the chorus, just my silly ego talking.

And, in a nice way ("dammit, I accidentally erased the sound files"), get your singer to redo the first verse. In key.

Cheers

Messuggah,

Great work!! Love the overall tone, don't even mind the drums, at all. The bass sound is too cool.

Can't find anything to complain about.

BTW: Did your mom kick the stuff yet?

Keep um comming!!
