? For Previous Sonar Upgraders

Upgraders - is that a real word?

Anyways, Sonar2 was my first venture into cakewalk land, so this will be my first upgrade. So how do the upgrades usually work for Sonar? Does the pre-order price remain static, or does it raise once it's officially released?

Also, do they ever sneak in any extra deals? Sonic Foundry does this. They'll offer the upgrade and a few weeks later bait you some more with a better offer or some free extra software or sample CD's or the like.
 
Don't quote me, but my recollection is that the upgrade offer pretty much remains status quo for quite awhile. I don't recall it either getting better or getting worse over time.

The tougher question for me has always been whether to go with the "deluxe" edition, or the "standard" edition. The only deluxe version I've ever bought was Pro Audio 9 Deluxe - and it was a royal POS (not PA9, just the goodies that came with the deluxe version). Since then I have shy'd away from the "XL" versions (now Producer).

There's some interesting things in the Producer Edition, but in all honesty, unless they are light years ahead of anything else - I already have all that crap in one form or another. I'm not knocking the Untrafunk plugins, or the VSampler, or insinuating that they aren't worth the extra money (I don't know enough about them to do so, even if I wanted). I'm just saying that I have the same stuff from other mfg's already.

I passed on both Sonar 1 and 2 XL editions, and really haven't missed them a bit. In fact, if I recall, I ended getting some of the Sonar 1 XL stuff in the Standard Sonar 2 release anyway.

The last upgrade i did from sonar 1 xl to sonar 2 xl cost more than buying a new copy of sonar 2 xl at the local cakewalk roadshow. that pissed me off but I can't see them handing out copies of Sonar 3 XL for less than 180 this time. the shit is getting expensive.

One thing that might make a difference this time is that the producer version includes "Enhanced mixing console (per-channel EQ, assignable FX controls)", as opposed to just being a set of plugins or instruments. In particular, I can see being able to assign a couple of knobs to the particular FX parameters I'm tweaking as being a real time saver. As long as the EQ sounds good (and I expect it to), the EQ controls may be nice too.

Granted, nothing that affects the SOUND output (where the rubber really meets the road), but a couple of things which might make your workflow more efficient.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm just trying to formulate my gameplan for the upgrade. I'll probably go ahead and pre-order now.

I had pretty much made up my mind to go for the producer edition. I have 2XL right now so it would only be $80 more to get a lot of cool stuff. I have some pretty good fx plugins, but had been contemplating buying an entire "suite" anyways so this works well. Plus, I've been using that Computer Music sampler DS-404 which has been a pain, so V-Sampler looks pretty good. So for me, the XL upgrade will be worth it.
