Let's see, where was I?

...Zoe's gut began to ache. He had that sinking feeling that his chances weren't very good. With the mission being thrown out the window, what were the chances of finding an hospitable planet in this parsec?...

...what would the old Drake Equation say about it? About the chances of there being a life-sustaining planet on any of the nearest 1000 stars?....

...He began the scan. Star by star. First the close ones, then the ones more distant. He still had the Jump Drive, enough for one hop of many parsecs....but where to jump? That was the problem. How do you get back home if you don't know where you are?....

...and even more grim: was Earth even there anymore if he could ge back?....

...Zoe's brain made quick, lightning fast calculations. Time, air, life support--energy, computing power. All were finite. No. There was only one possible solution--program the computer to do the search...

...and then go back into a conservation state of sleep. And while at, Zoe realized, why not set the program for termination if no planet is found?....

...Yes! That was the way to do it. Why wake up from the hybernation to only choke, freeze, and die, alone in space? He would program the comp to reinstate him only if a suitable planet could be found in the quadrant scan....

..Zoe set the program and commenced it. Then he powered down the Gideon once again for conservation. Then he climbed back into his ice tomb of hybernation...

...he began to drift off again. Then he thought to himself and grinned: "I haven't had a bath in 40 years!"....

..but this was the way it was taught at the Space Cadet Academy: Reason, reason, and logic before emotion. He had passed the test, now there was nothing left for him to do but cry, and wait for what would either be death or a new world...

...the red light was flashing. His mind was crawling, sliding back onto the plane of reality. But there was no way to know for sure...

...could he have died? Was the red light the termination read-out? Was he ascending into heaven? Zoe was an atheist, but you know the old saying....

..."There are no atheists in a fox-hole". But what the fuck was a 'fox-hole'? Zoe had no idea. It must be an old Earth phrase about foxes and their dens. He didn't care....
