Thought I'd share my DIY blog to new home recordists. It's about building your own pop shield.

DIY Pop Shield

Hope you like it.

Pretty damn cool MG!
Did you find that you had to double up on the pantyhose for good results or just one layer was sufficient?

Here's something i suggested last week in the recording teqhnique forum.

"Go to Walmart and buy a cheap pair of pantyhose and a cross-stitch hoop. You can make your own pop filter relatively cheap.Use the legs of the pantyhose to hang the pop filter
If you really feel like going the extra mile you can get a conduit clip, mount it onto the cross-stich hoop threaded screw and mount it onto a mic stand."

What also works is just another mic stand.Just slide the hoop into the mic clip slot and it'll stay in place just like a mic would.

I'll give you credit for the clip and coat hanger idea but i've suggested this a few times over the last year.:D

Considering you can buy a pop filter with similar effectiveness and an adjustable gooseneck for $15, why would you bother?

Well mgjr {is that pronounced like "Moogjar" ? ;)}, yours is certainly more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than mine !

Why bother to learn to drive ? After all, there's lots of others that can and there's buses, trains and cabs. And cars and petrol cost so much. You could easilly reach the age of 97 without once thinking "I wish I could drive....."
On the other hand, maybe it's fun. Maybe we as humans like the sense of accomplishment in having done something ourselves. Maybe cost is less a consideration in some peoples' thinking process which is why they decorate their own pads, work on their cars and bikes, build their own instruments, write their own VSTs, record their own music at home and do their own mixing and oftentimes mastering etc.
As Budgie once sang, "People are strange........"

In effect it was two layers because all I had to do was slip it onto the inner loop like a sock. Other instructions tell you to cut and fold, hence having two layers. The difference is mine will have an "air space" in between layers.

Thanks for reading the blog.

I mentioned that in my blog that I could've just shelled out the dough for a cheap ready-made filter but I just like to build stuff especially when it's simple to construct. Call it a hobby, just like my home-recording hobby.

@grim - haha, moogjar's fine.

Hey thanks for the compliment and further explanation on "WHY D-I-Y". I always say, "Why not?" I did the pop filter because of the fun factor.

I saw your pop filter... hey, whatever works. I did mention in the blog about Michael Jackson's pop filter in the "We Are The World" video. Compared to that, yours was aesthetically more pleasing (except his particular pop filter will probably sell for hundreds of dollars on ebay if someone had the right mind to keep it).
