What does THIS button do?
Should I track everything on one project, and just mix the cd as a whole, or should I track individually and mix everything separately?

(obviously I am noob to mixing so I'm not shooting for anything incredible just keeping everything from sounding horrible)

You have the luxury of doing which ever way you prefer. There are no rules in recording as long as it ends up sounding good. However, here is something to consider.

If you track every song in one session and then sit down to mix them all later, you may discover that one or more instruments (tracks) did not come out as nicely as you expected. (No offense, it happens to all of us.) Now you have to either put up with bad tracks in every song or go back and re-track that instrument for every song. Nough said!

Getting good sound is mostly all about experimenting with different mics and mic placement. If doing several songs, I would tend to take it slowly and experiment by making lots of changes along the way. You will learn more that way. You probably don't want all of your songs to sound alike anyway.

Good Luck,
