For $1500 you could get a couple of firewire Motu828mkIIIs, giving you 16 direct ins/outs, 4 preamp'ed in/outs, 2 spdifs, 2 midi i/os and a future expansion via 16 ADAT channels. Plus you get DSP effects built in.

My 828mkII has been rock-solid.
