My dad bought me a Realistic reel to reel back in '78 that I still have and sounds great by the way, And I remember them having an 8 track recorder.........
Man, my brother still has some old 8 tracks lying around filled with live recordings of various Discos:rolleyes: here in Miami.

I had one of those!
I wound up taking the motor out and using it for a tattoo gun! hahahaha

The first stage of home recording : circa 1979 , various portable home cassette recorders : Sharp , General Electric , Panasonic used with Memorex Mrx3 high bias 90 minute tapes. Basic rhythym tracks were recorded using the cassette recorder's condenser mic. The sound was then sent back to the guitar amp ( Yamaha YT-90 ), in the secondary channel. A second guitar part was played LIVE , in conjunction with the recorded track. The final sound was recorded with another cassette recorder. Effects used : Morely Volume/ Wah/ Fuzz/ , E. H. Doctor Q envelope follower , E.H. Big Muff , internal reverb / tremolo on Yamaha amp. Vocals could be added with a Shure unisphere high impedance mic, 1/4" plugs. Good results and lots of fun.

Second Stage Home Recording : circa 1983 . A similar cassette -based system, except using a BiAmp Pa mixing board. Simple 3 band eq and a DeltaLab Effectron Jr rack digital delay. Basic tracks could also be recorded on a Teac 10" home stereo reel-to reel, using Shure SM 57 mics in Left and Right mic inputs. Basic Mixdown was achieved with The Biamp mixing board , final mix recorded on Technics or Panasonic CTF Series cassette deck, Maxell UDXLII 90 high bias tape. Various keyboard instuments used: Crumar orchestrator, Korg Poly/ Ensemble , Rhodes Stage 73 piano, Yamaha CP70 b electric grand.Guitar and bass were sent through MusicMan amps, or Yamaha Solid State , or occasional Marshall JCM 800.
 
Third Stage Home Recording : circa 1987 True multi-tracking with Tascam PortaStudio Cassette (porta one ) , use of DBX noise reduction, ability to re-eq using Teac home stereo graphic equilizer ,Fostex MP1200 12 channel powered mixer with Effects and EQ. Sequencing done on Korg SQD-1 sequencer using QD( quick disks ). Drum machine/ rhythym units: Korg DRM-1 , Yamaha RX 17 . Keyboards expanded to include Korg DSS-1 12 bit sampler, Crumar Bit-1 , Korg Poly -800, Korg PolySix, Korg MonoPoly, Korg Poly 61 , Roland Juno 60 , Yamaha DX 27 . Various digital guitar effects; Korg SDD 1200 dual digital delay , Digitech PDS 1700 delay, Digital Chorus/ Flanger , many Boss effects. Mixdowns could be achieved using the Fostex Mixer and various outboard gear. Cassette masters were done onto Metal oxide cassette tapes : usually Fuji or Denon or Maxell or TDK. Cassette duplication was done onto High bias 60's : Maxell or Fuji. Various extended dance-club mixes and radio mixes were done to allow for marketing flexibility.Computer was used for basic cassette J-card Text design.

Fourth Stage Home Recording Circa 1988 : Multi-tracking capability expanded with purchace of used Tascam Studio 8 ( model 388 8 track , 1/4" analog reel to reel console ). Further advances in mix downs using Alesis Midi-verb and Korg DRV1000 , Drv 2000 digital reverbs. Guitar recording expanded with use of Electrovoice n-Dym mics :408 & 757. Data storage of sequences onto Alesis datadisk floppy 3 1/2 " recorder. Futher exploration into direct recorded sounds and very tight mixdowns. Part time employment at recording studios that employed Tascam MS-16 multitrack and various mixing consoles. Further use of outboard gear: Symetric Compressors, Korg DRV3000 , Eventide H3000 ultra harmonizer , ART muti-effect unit, Digitech DSP 128 muti-effect.Use of Mesa Boogie rack mount guitar pre-amp system. Heavy use of Fender American Strat-Plus with lace sensor pick ups. Use of Dimarzio Shock Wave Strat / booster system.
Use of Ibanez bass with active pick ups.

Damn ! I can remember the Stones playing "Get off of my cloud" in '65, the Monkees on telly, "Penny Lane" and the Nigeria/Biafra civil war in early '67. Now that's being viewed as ancient history ! And I remember it ! Hubba hubba !

Born 1951 in the reign of good King George VI when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister (ouch - that makes me sound sooo old - but I'm not) ;):p

My first tape recorder was a Tandberg 3321X half-track cross-field head. I started off with a pair of Unisound electrets, but quickly upgraded them to a pair of Beyer M67n (which I still have) - I monitored on a pair of AKG K60 headphones.

I added a Nakamichi 550 portable cassette a few years later.

The open reel was later upgraded to a Teac A7300-2T (I still have all these machines)

I was one of the very early adopters of digital recording in 1983 when I bought my Sony PCM-F1 system and was (I think) the first to release an alum recorded by digital overdubbing (building up tracks by using a single PCM-F1 processor and two transports).

I later added Sony C9 transports and a CLUE editing system (this was before the age of computer editing).

I went DAT in the 1990s with a pait of Fostex D-10 machines and added a Tascam 24-bit DAT later.

I bought the 24-bit Fostex FR-2 when it came out and have now sold that and upgraded to the Nagra VI recorder, which I bought in 2008.

Monitors are now K+H O110D and Harbeth M30A and headphones are Sennheiser HD 800 and HD 25-1 controlled by a Grace M902b.

Microphones are listed elsewhere in the thread asking for a mic. list.

I don't think Revox made 4 track machines - don't you mean a quarter-track?

A 4-track has four tracks going in the same direction, a quarter-track has two thin tracks so you can turn the tape over and use the "other side".

I recorded on a Teac Sound on Sound, Reel to Reel, Still have it somewhere, using an ES 335 Gibson through two Fender Concert amps, and an Ensoniq ES1 Synth.
Wow, the memories!!!!
 
Way back before the day ..... in the late sixties and into 70' and 71' I usta record all of my term papers and such then turn them into the teachers on cassette!

They were all very impressed, except for the occasional English teacher who wanted my work written or typed.
 
Korg MS-10, Dr. Rhythm, Elka organ, guitars and a Fostex X-15.
Started out with a Supro Amp and a Pyramid guitar, went to an Amepeg Reverberrocket I wish I still had..
