Footprint size of old JBL 4311 or 4312 monitors?

I am getting given a set of old-school JBL monitors (4311 or 4312 I think), at the end of July when I go to Arizona to visit my family. Right now I am in the process of designing a desk for my gear. I need to figure out how deep my top shelf needs to be to fit these beasts.

Can anyone that has a pair of these tell me what the footprint of these speakers is (mainly the depth, but width too)? I know they are pretty big like 12" or so if memory serves.

I have a set of 4311's still in use. I'll post the dimensions later tonight when I get home. Keep in mind these aren't nearfields

Hmm, I guess they aren't huh? I should probably read up about them and figure out where to put them. They will be my only monitors for a while (if I can get away with that), so I wonder if I could use them up close...

Since they aren't designed as nearfields does that mean that the full image and all frequency ranges wouldn't have fully propagated at 2 feet or so?

How do you have yours placed in reference to your listening position, Don?

Here ya go. The 4311 is 14 1/4" wide by 11 3/4" deep by 23 1/2" tall. They weigh about 50 lbs each. I plan on having my woofers reconed sometime. I found a place online (gotta remember where) that recones them for, I think, about 50 or 60 bucks each.

I've used a spare bedroom for the last couple of years for mixdown. The speakers were about 4 feet away. Not the best situation but you work with what you've got. My mixes were really bass heavy until I "learned" the speakers in this small room. I'm about 95% complete building a 1200 sq ft studio behind my house. At some point I would like to soffit mount the 4311's. Do some reading in the studio building forum. There's a lot of good stuff there. John Sayers has a bedroom studio drawing on his site that you might want to look at. I bought a pair of nearfields (M-Audio SP-8B) a couple of months ago but I'm waiting to use them in the new studio.

Like I said, you use what you have and learn to adjust until you can afford to move up a step. Best of luck to ya.
