Folky-ish...thing

A good friend on another site posted this as an instrumental, so I wrote a lyric this morning and sang it. Just wondering if it seems to fit...sonically, musically...whatever.

It's called "Time Marches On," and McGitarz is the artist that posted the music bed. (Hope he doesn't see this post here, lol). LOVE YA' MC!!!

I am not that familiar with folk/country type of music... but the song sounds right.

How did you do the vocals? (mic, preamp)

The vocals sounds kinda raw as well... may not be a bad thing... good performances nevertheless!

For the whole song, the low end energy is a little too strong for my taste... perhaps some lowcut here and there.

Thanks for listening Leeking. The mix is a bit bass heavy, which I think he was going to fix on his next mix. Good ear.

The vocal is just an AKGc3000 (shitty condenser for vox) through a DMP3 preamp. I scooped the upper mids a bit because it's a harsh mic.

actually, I don't have the nerve to critisize mcgitz ...he's a good player.. but this mix IS a bit thick, if you know what I mean...well, I am sure you do.

I'd ditch the layered vocal crap and just do a single track...maybe a harmony off in the back and off to a side...but the layering has got to go. Then get mcgtz to retrack it for you to give you some vocal space!

I say - hell yeah.

I've found that with you, you seem to be able to do most genres. I mean you are able to do alternative, country, folk, rock..

To me thats talent.

New mix is up. I cut about half of the bg vocals out, and I turned them all down 5db across the board. I'm not asking you to listen again, lol...just saying thanks for the feedback.

Nice job man!
Your enthusiasm is quite refreshing.
I’ve been sorda burned out on the music industry for several years and can’t seem to get past it. It’s refreshing to see an honest effort by a real musician now and then.

I’ve been checking out your web-page and holy crap can your Daughter sing.
She should send a copy of Angel to Vince Gill and the group He hangs with.
I haven’t heard pure tone and depth like that in a long time.
By the way, is that a cover tune or an original?

I have a daughter about the same age and I think both of you have inspired me to
work on Her vocal ability a little more. She’s already really good but I think She has potential for great.

Anyway back to you. If you walk away from the project for a week or two and come back to it, you’ll see things in a different light.
Over all the writing is strong but arrangement and production needs a little air. (let it breath a little)
Remember the less is more factor.
With the right arrangement this could be Keith Urban’s next hit.

CGibson - thanks a lot for your thoughtful response. "Angels" is something I wrote a few months ago. The idea was for it to be sung by 3 different female vocalists to represent 3 different stages of my grandmother's life, but the other 2 vocalists haven't shown up yet. Perhaps this would be A PERFECT TIME to get your daughter recording, lol. - Those are just scratch tracks, because another guy who can record very well was supposed to track the real stuff, but I can start over if your daughter is interested. Just lemme' know. Again, thanks a lot for the listen and the feedback.

Chris, I gotta say there isnt a song on BetteroffDad that you havnt impressed me with. This definetely insn't one either. Great lyrics. And thats coming from a military guy. Vocals fit perfectly. But I must say. It's still not "It only Hurts" Sounds great as usual. Hey....You still have to teach me "sweepin' for shit" Well Done

Thanks a lot, Tony. The guy that wrote and recorded the music is an ex G.I. who now works for the Department of Defense in Germany, so I was definitely nervous about sounding like a total dumbass, LOL. I appreciate the listen.
