People,

Looking to move to a solid state preamp; & want basically linear amplification with little or no coloration. I know Grace Design (& even FMR) preamps fit that bill...but I'd rather have line inputs vs. Hi-Z. The classic Focusrite stuff (Reds, ISA'a, etc.) all have signature sounds (tonal character), but then I found the Twin Trak Pro...which is solid state, transformerless & Class A.

So...how transparent are they?

Anyone have experience with this peice?

Thanks,

Yeah I Run A Tlm 103 Thru A Tt Pro......if You Can Get A Decent Price On It, It Is A Good Usable Unit......fairly Transparent And A Bit "strerile" Or Solid State Sounding, But Then Again It Is Solid State...the I Actually Like The Optical Compressor On It Too.... :)

Don...

Thanks man.

Is there an acceptable range over the 10X rule (Load Z 10X Source Z)? I've turned my attention over the last few days to the RNP8380 from fmraudio, but with a load Z of 5k...(& since Z & fr are related)...I wouldn't want the damn thing to make my best mic (@ 100 Ohms) sound too bright, or grainy.

I have heard that, w/ source Z (mic)...lower is better; & w/ load Z (preamp), higher is better (due to the fact that it's a measure of how much power the input will draw.)

But I don't want to go hog wild. The RNP's input impedance would be *50* times greater than my best mic; & that seemed like an awful lot to me...it sounds scary.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

BTW - The TrakMaster is 2.5k. Is that better?

Well 100 Ohms would be your source Z and ~1k Ohms would be your load Z.....Therefore you would adjust the input Z of the pre to match you load of the mic. In theory this would prevent loading and "reflections" of the electrical signal.........However since not all pres have adjustable Z's the only way to know for sure is to demo the product.....good luck.
