Has anybody use these? There is a used Penta single channel pre/comp for $350 and was thinking about getting it.

Should I just save up for the reds or any other recomendations?

You know, I like my penta. I've used every feature on there with good results. I'm no pro, however. I haven't compared it to anything but the pres in my Fostex 450 mixer and a Blue Tube. It beats both of those, I can tell you that.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have anything you used it on posted anywhere?

What do you want? A vocal? An acoustic guitar? A completed song? Whatever you want I'll encode it into an mp3 and post it for you to download.

Don't pay more than $275 for a used one. You can get them new for $350 from Sam Ash If I remember right. I'll get those mp3s up asap.

Hey Tex

Here's some links, not to mp3s, but to some really short 24 bit/44.1 khz wavs. I recorded them with my V67 into the Penta and then into my Maudio Audiophile sound card:

Acoustic:

Vox:

Also, I recorded the exact same passages into a Presonus Blue Tube preamp, just for reference.

Acoustic:

www.knerd.com/~cispop/BTV67trimmed.wav

Vox:

Please note that I did not use the compression on the Penta at all. The compressor on this unit is great, and if you'd like some compressed clips, just give me a holla.

Also, I'm going to sponsor a little contest. The winner gets a couple free CDs from my label Coming In Second (I know, none of you have ever heard of us.) Anyway, whoever can name the artist who originally recorded both the guitar riff and the vocal bit I posted above wins. Believe me, if you know who originally wrote those, you'll probably like the music on my record label.

That Penta sounds a little smoother than the BT. Thanks for the examples.

You stumped me on the song though :p

Yeah, no problem. The sad thing about budget preamps is that you can pay twice as much for a preamp and get a just noticable difference. I really love the opto-compressor on the unit, though. That, by itself, is probably worth at least $250. Plus, there's a pretty cool stereoizer effect on it, and a decent, subtle tube emulation circuit. If you can talk down the guy selling the used one to $250, that'd be a good deal, IMO.
