I am NOT a Gear Whore. ;)
So i've decided that maybe it wouldnt hurt to invest in a small pack of foam. Im getting auralex Designer studiofoam, if any of you are familiar with it, its a pack of 32 1'x1'x2" panels, for 100 bucks. i know the object is not to cover every surface.

but where should i put them? im thinking either behind the drumset, or behind the desk. i might have enough for both.

this leads me to my question; should i turn my drum set around, so that it faces into the wall where i would be putting the foam? i put some cheap leftover carpet foam on the wall and cieling but that did nadda. theres alot of space in front of the set, which is where i think my problem lies.

ive thought of getting a drum shield, with the 5.5ft panels to put in front of it also. what do you's think of my situation.

i know that mixing in a corner is not a good thing, but i work with what i have, and until i move out and get my own house, this is all that i have to use.

i don't use the half stacks or PA for recording at all, i usually go direct in on guitar and bass. the dehumidifier is because the room is in the very moist basement. the crap space is filled with old crap computers that my dad thinks we should save until the end of the world. :) heres an expert's drawing of my room, (aka results of 2 minutes and paint)

Many people are just going to tell you to get rigid fiberglass which isnt a bad idea. I'd tell you to build bass traps to put around your kit and I would use the foam on the ceiling since it is light weight. The foam on the ceiling will help cut down reflections fro mthe cymbals and the bass traps made form 703 will help reduce lower frequences around the kit.

Add me to the list of "many people". Get a bale (the minimum quantity they will sell you, a two foot high stack of 2 by 4 foot panels) and then experiment with how many stacks to place where. usually a few four inch thicks stacks in the corners and the rest as two inch thick stacks on the walls to cut down the slap echoes.

When you think you have the arrangement you like frame them if you want, cover them in an open fabric like felt or burlap, and then mount on the walls.

im going to do a search on building the bass traps, thanks.

i have to look into the 'rigid fiberglass'. is 2" thick fiberglass heavy? i have a 2" sheet of plexiglass, about 4'x4' that i mount a christmas tree on (yes, nothing is simple in my home, we need 2" bulletproof glass to mount a 15' christmas tree on every year..) and that sheet is over 120lbs.

how much does the fiberglass usually go for?
i must search!

You need 4''-6'' for bass trapping. nothing less will do.

The weight of rigid fiberglass you need is 3 PCF; since a 4" x 2' x 4' piece = 8/3 (2-2/3)pounds, it's not too heavy to handle or mount (the frame will weigh as much or more than the absorbent)... Steve

wow, thats pretty light. i just do a search on google and have the stuff delivered to my house, or do i have to look for a local fiberglass distributer or something?

oooh thanks, im thinking that maybe my hopeless room isnt so hopeless anymore- that material, the 703 fiberglass, isnt so exspensive at all.

ok so i printed the entire Ethan Winer Acoustic Treatment article, after reading about 2 pages, i could look at the screen anymore, i had to have it on paper!

so thats all fine and good, i have to read it in more detail now.

So bass traps sound good. i'm already thinking of where im putting them, next week i place the order for the fiberglass. i got those auralex foam pieces coming. i figure i'll make one of those pretty designs like in studios, on the wall behind my desk/mix station. i'll still have some left over, so i'll do the same behind my drum kit.

but still, am i going to need to move the drum kit? there still all that open space in front of it, about 5-6 feet. the problem is, directly in front is two doors, one is a sliding accordian style closet door, where i store more crap, and the other is a really F'd up bathroom that the dehumidifier drains into. i cant put a trap where the cieling meets the wall because of the doors, unless i put the trap at a *very* extreme angle. i could put a trap between the two doors, because there is about a 3 foot wall between them, and have the trap verticle, on the wall. would that be ok, or useless?

i wish i had my own house-i'd sleep in the living room and make a really nice studio...
im going to ask my parents if i can expand into the adjacent room; i cant have the "control" room in the same room as the studio anymore, theres just not enough room. i think i have a better chance of some random person handing me the title and keys to a new porsche...

Which one of these is easier to get, Fiberglass, rockwool, or mineralwool? I was set on getting some more foam until i heard all the raves about fiberglass. I heard it's cheaper also, so i'm considering switching to fiberglass. Since i'm going to most likely be using a closet for vocals when i move, would it be better for me to just go ahead with buying the foam or get the 703 panels?

That depends on where you live in relation to a supplier. These three materials are similar enough in characteristics and in price (I think) that most folks end up purchasing whichever one happens to be available in their region.

Just say no to foam, tone. It costs a lot more and does a lot less than fiberglass. Make yourself some fiberglass panels and you can take them with you whenever you move.

Depends on your locality, and to my knowledge rockwool and miineralwool are synonymous.

use 703 in any room.

Unless you are ordering it by the truckload it is usually best to pick it up at the insulation distributor.

The reason is that the stuff is so light it is sold in two by two by four foot bales, which is still light enough to easily handle but it is OVERSIZE by UPS and parcel post rates and thus costs a fortune to ship.

im about to put in a big order for mineral wool in the next week or two...ive got a buddy who is a contractor, and knows such and such person at an hvac place OR WHATEVER THE FUCK HE SAID.

anyway...he's assured me a deal, and it's local to us

PM me or hit me up on AIM if you're interested...
ill have pricing soon
