What do you guys think about placing foam around the shell making a circle. Have you tried??. What kind of foam would you use???.

Thanks

I use some 2" thick blue upholstery foam in my kick. It's a Pearl ELX 22". The faom sits on the bottom 1/4 of the drum and just touches both heads.

I'm not big on really boomy kicks, which is why I dampen mine. I cut a 4" hole in the reso, and the drum sounds fine. Everyone who hears it like it anyway. No complaints.

I also use one of those Falam Slam kevlar patches on the batter side. Nice tight sound, and my heads last a long time.

Hope this helps.

I´ve seen a Pearl Studio Drum Kit with Sonex inside the kick, it looks like the head has a dampening ring made of foam behind it. The foam covers all the kick depth touching both heads. The results: punchy, clicky, sound. I´ll try it

I hope it works out for you!
What kind of music do you play?
Peace.

Right now I´m playing blues, but I used to do some rock, fussion, and a little bit of jazz.
What about you?

If it works for you, do it! Doesn't matter if we dig the sound or not, it's up to you. Personally, I like some dampening on the bass drum, just experiment!

A lot of people say the Evans EMAD bass drum heads work well for dampening the bass drum without even putting anything inside it. I haven't tried them, though.

No foam

My friend swears that he can have a nice sounding Bass
without any mufflying?

Lately I've been playing everything from twangy rock to progressive metal.
i don't change the sound of my kick at all, other than tuning it when it goes out. Toms I change alot depending on what I'm doing.

I agree that it makes no difference what someone else says about what you're doing, as long as you're happy.

I guess I did'nt understand your first post Tama, as I did'nt realize you were refering to those dampening heads.

Peace.

I've used foam inside kick drums for many, many years. I buy "pieces" of foam from upholstery shops and then cut them to size (this type of foam can also be used to line drum cases, etc). You can get the pieces left over from various jobs for next to nothing.

I normally use a "flat" piece of foam that lays across the bottom of the drum and contacts the bottom 1" - 2" of the two heads. Once I get the sound I need, I use a small amount of masking tape to lock the foam in (no duct tape - too much residue). I'm sure you could make a "ring" but I have never felt the extra effort was worth the time.

I think foam works better than a pillow or a blanket - since pillows or blankets often add too much mass, which not only dampens the ring, but muffles volume (dampen is good, muffle is bad).
