Foam diffuser???

Styrofoam will kinda/sorta work - but unless it's pretty dense, will pass mids and lows for sure. If I'm going to give up 7-8" of depth, I expect it to reach down into the mids.

Now, if the density/coating of the styrofoam is good enoug and the wells are calculated/cut correctly, then it would work fine. Normal styrofoam - nah.

i'ld stay away from it personally... generally speaking it's absorptive properties would out way it's reflective...

Well, that's kind of the whole thing with styrofoam - it doesn't absorb diddly. It's basically inert. It passes some things and reflects others. I was just saying to stiffen it up with a coating or use denser stuff to make sure it can reach down to the design frequencies for something of that size.

Wood is certainly better.

I have 2 questions.

In laymens terms if possible... when are diffusers needed?

And secondly, Since people mentioned that the foam really doesnt reflect the sound that well what would be a better material to use with this same mod?

Or maybe a better question is... what is a better way to make cool looking diffusers such as those?

Thanks

Wood is great. A lot of people make these kinds of diffusors out of 2x2'x on end cut to specific lengths and mounted in a specific pattern. The lengths and repeat of pattern are determined by the size of each pc (2x2 usually for ease) and what frequency range you're trying to impact.

The 2x2's are mounted to a pc of plywood on the back. It's a LOT of work but they can work very well if you do all the research for the sizes.

Thanks... Now what about ... "When are diffusors needed?"

Anyone? I have a rather small room so Im not sure I would need them? 10.5x11x8
