You cannot use balanced cables on a RNC as the input jack is wired for single cable in / out operation (read the instructions) which would lead to a signal loss if balanced cables were used.
I followed to the letter the instructions on FMRs website about wiring XLR connections so that pin 3 is grounded to sleeve.
I did not try to use TRS - TRS or TRS - XLR cables
surprising as it may sound I actually read the entire manual and wiring instructions on their FAQ page before I even took the unit out of the box
How many consoles (that home recording people can afford) have balanced channel inserts? Come to think of it I have only used 2 consoles in my life with balanced channel inserts. The whole everything needs to be balanced subject is over rated. The only time gear needs to be balanced is for long cable runs. Yes it is nice to have balanced gear but it's not always possible and adaptors are easy to make.
I don't use a consol so I have no idea how many of them have what kind of inserts.
I wanted to use the unit as a tracking compressor and possibly as a mixbus compressor after my summing mixer.
Running mic>Pre>RNC>Converters>DAW gave me problems
Running DAW>D/A>Summing Box>RNC>A/D>DAW gave me problems
perhaps I am the only person in the world who doesn't have unbalanced inserts on my pres. Perhaps I am the only person in the world who doesn't like the RNC. My statement that I got rid of mine does seem to be drawing some flack

whatever the case the OP asked for opinions and I wanted to give him some feedback as an average home user who had owned the unit and wasn't actually an FMR authorized dealer trying to sell him one.
I made every effort to point out my opinions were subjective and my opinion only.
YMMV
