I picked up a couple used today and hooked them up to my vocal/harp preamp (UA solo 610) and to the guitar amp (fmr rnp). I started with the really nice mode and everything at 12 oclock. Both had a lot more high end and less bass that in the bypass mode. I have only used UA plug in compressors after the fact. this is my first experience with a hardware compressor. Is this normal? Thanks. Walter

You can hear my 2 newest songs below and see what I mean compared to all the previous ones that used the LA 2A UA plugin compressors.

What were the settings on? ratio, release, how much compression showing on the compression leds?

You have to get to know how it works and set it up for what you want it to do.

Read the manual.

The RNC is not a preset plugin, it is a compression toolbox, you have to learn the tools.

Cheers
Alan.

The RNC is a good unit the only thing I don't like about them is what you do to channel A also happens to channel B

I have 2 RNC's, actually I just bought a Funk logic rack for them.

I really like the RNC's but they are very temperamental to set up compared to some other compressors. The up side is when you get them sorted out they are a fantastic piece of gear, especially for the price.

Cheers
Alan.

Walter, how much gain reduction were they doing? In supernice mode the RNCs are amazing, but you've got to set the threshold carefully so it doesn't squash the low end. The strength of the RNC in supernice mode IMO is that it sounds a lot like a high quality mulitband comp (it's broadband though), where it controls the lows and low mids really well but leaves the highs sounding natural. I usually set the threshold so that it's only doing 4-6 dB of gain reduction max.

thanks for all the responses! looked at the manual and will go back to it this afternoon. Walter

Day 2 of using these new compressors. I got a better grasp of them tonight. I took more time with them tonight listening before recording. Here are 2 songs from tonight. Any feedback on how the compressors sound (vocal/harp mic and guitar amp) would be appreciated. Thanks! Walter

Howdy Alan when you put the RNP or RNC in the funk logic racks do you have to do any other work than pulling off the knobs and putting them and the extensions on? Electrical and such or soldering.

The rack has not arrived yet, but it should be only a knobs and buttons job according to the web site. I will let you know when they arrive, it may be another week before it gets here.

By the way did you check out the fun face plates they have in stock for use as blanking plates here and here and the Chevy series rack? I love companies with a sense of humour.

The funk logic came and it took 10 minutes to fit both RNC's. Looks really smart. Funny I was showing it to people and someone picked up that the model number of the Funk Logic was NCC-1701, the number of the "Star Ship Enterprise".

Took me longer to get the funk logic into my studio rack, I wanted to put it near the top where I had a spare space, but the dammed cables would not reach from the patch bay (soldered type), so I had to move everything else up and put it at the bottom. Oh well I am putting a new patch bay in soon so I'll fix it up then.

Cheers
Alan.

Very funny yet useful stuff thanks for turning me on to this.
And don't be afraid to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Hey Walter,

Re: the RNC causing thin sound with exaggerated highs, this can happen with the RNC when connecting it directly to balanced gear. It is an unbalanced unit designed to work as an insert. If you just connect a +4 balanced signal to its ins and outs, it will indeed sound extremely thin and treble-y. How are you connecting to the UA preamp?
