Floor Monitor Volume Control?

How do you control the volume of a monitor that you're running out of a guitar amp? Do both passive and powered monitors have volume controls on them? What sort of 'OUT' do you need from an amp to connect a monitor? Thanks.

Powered monitors usually have volume controls. Some passives do, like I have a pretty inexpensive Peavey 112M that does, but most don't.

To go to a powered monitor, you'd need a line out; to go to a passive monitor, you'd need a powered out that might be labeled 'cabinet' or something like that.
