One Hit Wonder
That in itself is an issue.Somehow though I have trouble hearing just how bad it's purported to be?

"I think I just like things that glide around... That's the honest truth." lolThe vocals are very tentative and pitchy.
Um, well, so I forced myself to look for the problem again today. I think the first half is not too bad, it's really the second half of the last verse onward? Certainly the case about pitchiness, vocal tone also seemed to drop off considerably around there... If you have a sec please confirm I'm not going crazy! That in itself is an issue.
Thanks Mark! I'll try and tone down the drums, glad they sound realistic.I know I'm pretty late to the party .. Just wanted to say what an Excellant job you did on the keys. Great tone and they gelled very nicely with the bass. I thought the drums were nice but maybe a little too bright and a little dry. It did sound like I was in the same room with them though. Very Realistic.
Looking forward to the next mix.
Trying to sing along with this , if I sang low , it was too low. Singing high in the range you sang in , was too high. For me , I would definately have to repitch it to sing it at all. Enjoyed it .. mark
My totally honest opinion is you did a really good job, considering it's a woman's voice you're emulating and I'm pretty sure you're not a woman. The music sounds great.OK, if you have a sec give this a whirl. Pitch and voice crack issues are as few as I could make them.

This is probably the best I can do vocally for this song, barring a half-hour warmup and perhaps some gluhwein to warm up those vocal cords. Yes it's out of my range, but I've honestly done my absolute best.
Other improvements to the mix include a partially rebuilt master bus and a vocal chain makeover. Please, PLEASE let me know what you think, [honest and bashing encouraged, I enjoy pain] and thanks for giving this another spin!

You should try it with the lady so it reaches its potential. Ignore the bashful. They'll be flattered to try it out if they're a good singer!@Nola Glad you like it!
I didn't at any point seriously consider transposing, it would have helped the vocal but I'm just not a fan of doing that.
However I did try tracking the vocal 1 octave down (it fits exactly within my true register that way) but it didn't fit the arrangement well -- the keys and bass take up that whole register already.
The third option was getting a lady friend to do the vocal. Now maybe I was a bit to bashful to ask![]()

Good question! Certainly not to sound like the original. Not sure what your goal is.
TBH I think I'm content with just myself giving myself a pass. BTW after I finished this mix I went back and listened to the first mix I put up here. My, I didn't remember the vox being that bad!Your peers may give you a pass.
Fair enough. No-one will ever sing Stevie as well as herself. A gem I still hope to see live one day... if I'm lucky! But you'll always be compared to Stevie by those of my time.
Yes, alone in a basement studio is not that inspiring, is it. I'll try to sing it live someday! If you want to be a singer then you got to get out of your comfort zone. I mean, sing in a bar. Let it rip.
Much better.
I am 70.5 years old.
This song is in my DNA.
You have gotten better.
The arrangement is great.
Yes - your attempt to reach the notes is honest.
Yup -- definitely not an attempt at bettering the original. Just like, what if some jazz cats showed up at the Record Plant when they tracked Rumours? And not even. I love jazz, and I love Stevie, and... yup, how 'bout I leave it at thatThe music is a nice take on this classic song. It's enough of a departure from the original that people will not compare it directly. Kinda made it your own, kinda thing.
That is the last project I'm using Steinberg Groove Agent on. Since first programming the drums I've moved on to (sorry, mistake edited): MODO Drum, where actual tweaks can be made. I wish I had access to a real kit (I can play that no problem) but, limitations. Live with it!I really like the bass part. Not liking the snare so much.
I listened to all four iterations. Each one gets better. Nice.OMG...
So y'all are probably not wanting to put your ears through my falsetto voice ever again, and that's fine. But I recently bit the bullet on T-RackS 5 MAX, and decided to test-run my new baby on this project. The result is an entirely new mix on this project using ONLY IK Multimedia plugins; I went ahead and adapted the drums MIDI to MODO Drum as well (some room for improvement there).
The difference is yuge. This mix is maybe a bit rough as far as levels go but THE SOUND is there:

Breakdown of the processing:
Vox: Sunset Sound (iso booth 3), LA-2A*, Joe Chiccarelli channel strip, tape
Lead Rhodes: Tape Delay*, Sunset Sound (live room 3), tape
Backing Rhodes: Sunset Sound (live room 3), British Channel, tape
Bass: AmpliTube 5*, Sunset Sound (iso booth 3), tape
Drums: Classic EQ, Sunset Sound (live room), Comprexxor, Classic Clipper*, tape
Reverb send: Sunset Sound (plate 2)
Master bus/mastering (I did a mix of both at the same time, all on the same bus): Quad Image, tape, Master EQ, Saturator, Bus Comp, ONE (mastering processor)
*denotes plugins used in original mix (I had them at the time as part of T-RackS 5 SE)
Verb choice: "Dreams" was recorded mainly at the Record Plant, but Sunset Sound studio 3 is where some of Stevie's and the Mac's music was recorded.
Tape: All the instances of tape are different models, mostly just for fun and what "they" call "flavor".
My thoughts on the mix? A lot fuller, feels like it actually doesn't need any more instruments; I'm still wishing for some shakers and backing vox, but they aren't necessary. If anything, a tad bit muddy, but considering that there is no EQ on any of the keys or bass (I did highpass the vox but previously, it's baked into the stem), not too bad!
Your thoughts... Below please! and thank you!
