HI,
I've entered the murky world of DIY acoustics. I've been looking for a fabric that is cheaper than GOM but is still flame resistant and won't reflect high end. Here is what i came up with.

http://www.rosebrand.com/product476/66-Polyester-Knit-IFR.aspx?cid=168&idx=6&tid=1&info=Plain+Weave

Would this work? If anyone thinks I am on the wholly wrong path I'd like to know. I thought, of course about burlap and muslin, but i would prefer a fabric that was dependably flame resistant.

I'm not big on the sound of anything plastic. That's just me, I don't think it sounds musical. Polyester is plastic.

They do make flame retardant sprays that you could use.

Most plastic materials will burn. Bottom line is try a flame on it.

I do have a smoke alarm in my studio and think that's a good idea.

I can relate to wanting to not burn your house down, but what's the reason you're on this search?

true true, but I thought the GOM was polyester

The reason is just like you said, I don't want to burn my house down. My studio is a finished attic space, and everything I have is tied up in this house. I've been burned (no pun intended) by insurance companies before, and I don't want to give them any opening.

Michael,

this manufacturer will send you samples - get a sample and see if the product is breathable - if it is it will work fine.

Y'know, as professional wall-covery acoustical fabrics go, Guilford FR701 is about as cheap as it gets . . . you should see the stuff they use in high-end corporate boardrooms

Yep, that's true. As far as determining the FR (flame retardant) properties of a fabric, they are all either IRF (inherently flame retardant) or treated for FR. There is nothing in between. IFR fabrics are typically synthetics that simply fall apart and won't pass a flame to adjacent structural members. Treated FR fabrics do have to be recharged every few years to retain that property.

HI all, I appreciate the responses. I did a lot of digging, and I thought I would pass along the following result.

http://www.rosebrand.com/product1191/8-oz-Super-Vel-IFR.aspx?cid=150&idx=9&tid=1&info=Velour

This synthetic velour fabric is breathable, inherently flame resistant and allegedly "acoustically transparent" according to reps from Rosebrand. There is no documentation of its acoustic performance, but since transparency isn't really necessary for covering panels, I think it will work, look good, it's cheaper than GOM and won't burst into flames.
