BTW

Your voice does sound a HELLUVA lot better in this version; more "nuts out" ;)

Sam--I have no problem with the maximizing. On my system, the frequencies seemed well balanced. Heard no track distortion or artifacts from the limiter.

I did feel like you have the vocals pushed too far back with the verb or room you are using. I wanted to hear everything a bit more up front--less effect. A longer predelay on your verb would help. It allows the dry attacks to pop through before the verb fattens up the body of the voice, etc.

Actually, I wish I could hear a dry mix of this. I'd like to see what the pure tracks sound like before any processing. If I knew what that "picture" was, I could make more intelligent comments.

My general philosophy with a limiter across the stereo output buss is to just see it squashing the big peaks of the mix and coming as close as possible the rest of the time. Used in that manner, the limiter IS bringing up overall level but not squashing the daylights out of the whole track--just the high peaks. If I go past that, all sense of dynamics starts to disappear. I think thats what you gotta watch--especially in music like yours, which has a lot of dynamics. You definitely want to preserve them because its a vital element of what makes your music tick.

Also, Track Rat was right on with the comment about reducing the max ceiling on the limiter. Allow for .5bd below 0 just to keep things safe. Only the Clearmountains and Massenbergs of the world will hear any difference!

Anybody that would just hop up on a seal tune and belt it out like that I admire, they got balls . It seemed a little subdued in the beginning but jumped up it struttted to the end. I really like that style!

Good point... try this... do a mixdown without the limiter, open the wav in something like Cool Edit... and look at how high about 80% of the peaks are... should be around -3 or -4.... where ever that is, set the limiter threshhold to that, and then a little less...

Just something I've tried :) Could work better for ya...

I for one really dug this mix. Man you got some pipes eh:D . It didn't seem to have that "umph" that I've heard in most of your stuff, but I like diffrent. Alway's a pleasure to listen to your tunes!

thanks for the valuable input!

Gentlemen, I have grown to dis-like this version very much..

Bottom line, most people seem to agree that,

1 - the mix sounds worse than my usual efforts..

2 - the vocal performance was acceptable (excluding a few flat or sharp notes), but the vocal sound was bad.. "hollow, metallic, steel tunnel" etc. (and I totally agree)

3 - I over did it with the new toys.

4 - I really need a new mic

5 - get a girlfriend already!

I totally agree with all of these statements.. (even the ones I made up)

One of the main problems with this was, I started off with a recording that had problems to begin with.. I thought I could 'polish a turd' as they say, but you can't.. When you try to polish a crusted turd, all you do is wake up the stench again..

There were problems with the synth bass from the start, and the guitar sound, the vocals etc.. I have erased these original vocal tracks and I'll come back to this one day.. I have gained a lot of valuable insight from the comments here as always..Thanks.. I think I need to start something fresh from the ground up.. This song is irritating me.. I am not going to do any more vocals until I get a new mic.. Hopefully that will be today..

I have read all the comments several times, and I will use all the great tips you guys gave me.. Thanks for being detailed.. you guys rule!

I hope everyone knows how much I appreciate the consistent help and insight..

Let's get this thread off the front page so others will have a chance to reap the benefits of this great place..

thanks again everyone!

sounds cool, but I was hoping you could growl out a Seal voice :) that would get my seal of approval :D
All your creative ideas are what smoke on this thing!
Great job in that dept.
It seems this song would do a bit better with different vocals.. :(

Most musicians are sensitive, so I was debating about putting negatives... but, musicians also need coaches :)

I like when people give me something negative about my sound.. then I come back and make it 5 times better ;)

EVIL

Nice changes in the vocals Sabbath!! This song totally kicks butt! and I really dig the funky crazys now...and some of the screaming you put in there...VERY EVIL and very good. And the change near the end everyone raves about....one more raver right here...A very pleasing song to listen to from my standpoint!!

Hey Sam!

I liked your vocal sound on this, your voice sounds more "real" than usual, very nice.
Guitar was very uneffected in sound too, especially the intro, cool.

You sound really good solo.
I'd keep going in that direction, you have a fine voice!:)

I enjoyed it,thanks.

Pete

hehehee...I don't think there should be many "rules" in a voluntary clinic like this, but I do think that you should at least LISTEN to the tune before you critique it W.I.S.C.

I'll just assume you downloaded it earlier.

chrisharris - .W.I.S.C. is one of my friends who is busting my balls..

sorry guys, I killed it..

That makes sense. It was cool though...I have both versions on downloaded. You'll do another? Please?

You're still an ass. :D
