BASS DRUM!!!!!!!!!!! that is all i gotta say, i am no expert but that bass drum sounds like a cardboard box getting hit with a bat. Not to be insulting, the vocals sounded really cool, and the rest was pretty good.... maybe bring the bass up just a smidge, but that bass drum sounds really hollow. Also what kind of setup are you working with????

2lim,Thanks for taking a listen, the bass drum probably didn't sound very good becuase we used a radio shack my with a sock over it and it was placed inside the drum. The set up I have is, a delta 44 with cep, Audio buddy pre,sm 57, and for the drums we used the sm 57,an old condensor, and 2 radio shacks(or somthin like them). bass went direct into the pre, and the guitar and vocals were done with the sm 57.
Thanks again!

Is my song that bad! Man i thought i was going to get a lot of feedback on this one... please?

The first thing I notice is that the stereo image is very lacking. How far are you panning instruments? I almost thought it was mono. Try panning things harder right left, like the guitars and maybe the drum overheads if you used two mics. Leave the bass, kick and vocal centered.

You could do something with the guitar that comes in at 00:52, maybe more panning, or some additional effecting that would give some interest. The snare is very inconsistent in volume, perhaps compression or get the drummer to play better(who by the way, needs a lot of work on the timing front and chops). The bass should come up as should the kick drum.

The guitars have harsh sound to them, maybe with panning them further apart they won't blur the rest of the mix, perhaps EQ can help a little.

The vocals were one of the better parts in it though. The drummers performance, and the timing issues probably aren't helping you. The song was interesting, had bits of it stuck in my head today after listening this morning.

Damn good first try....I like the tune.....definitely take all the mixing advice offered.....i think a quick re-mix and a re-post would be a great idea......I think just the panning that Emeric mentioned would open up this mix alot and smooth it out...its way TOO in your face.....but overall, a damn good song and decent recording.....good job....

hey guys, Thanks for taking a listen! Im really surpised that you thought it was too mono, i actually have 3 guitar tracks in the heavier parts in the song, and two are panned hard right and left, maybe i should just raise them up a bit. as far as the drummer off beat, i think the whole band could use a metronome. The bass drum didnt sound all that good, but i wil raise it up a bit. I also just know did some eqing on the guitar to make it a little thicker sounding.I agree with the vocals, i was surprised at how they sounded with just an sm 57!

This is off the topic but i might every so often have the band over to record, i moslty record my own stuff. We were using the 57, an old condensor and 2 radio shack mics, and even though i really dont want to buy any more mics, would a 10.00 nady mic with an xlr cable, be better then radio shacks or should i just not even bother. Spending more then that isnt really an option because i would rather buy somthing for my self.

Thanks a lot!

You never did tell us:
What are you recording with?
and what RS mic did you have in the kick?

Kick drum.
Scoop out your Mids. Don't boost the low end, just scoop out the mids, and then raise the track volume some.

The rest of the mix isn't too bad.

But lose those mids on that kick drum.

Did you record on a PC?

If so, and you have gate & Compression AND the kick is on it's own track, record the Kcik onto another track, and then play around with the gate and Compression, while cutting the mids-so you can get some thump out of it, and boost around 2k-6k (You'll have to play with it some to see which yields the best sound) to add some slap/click to it.
