First Time Posting Stuff---> Spacey Lullabies

Hey Guys,

I guess this might not be the stuff alot of you guys are into but I figured I'd post anyways. I've only been makin stuff for about a year or so now so go easy. Really just wondering if you guys had some thoughts on stereo placement, EQ settings, and general oomph of the sounds, along with just general ideas on how I can improve the overall sound quality. It is electronic stuff but I use very little/no MIDI. "German Wind..." was made entirely on Fruity Loops while the other two tracks are a conglomerate of hard/software lyin around.

Listening to German Wind..

Nice low bass... in these crappy headphones it sounds well balanced.. maybe that string-sound was a bit loud.. around 1.40... and 2.30....

Hard to give any comments on a Fruity Loops song really (as I won't go into comments on songwriting)..

Barefoot, I guess that was just my way of being lazy in regards to what gear I use but, anyways, I run a PIII 833, 384Mb, 30G HD (Split in 3). I track using Cubase 5.0R6; make some beats using Fruity Loops; do wave editing with SF 5.0 and Wavelab; have Waves Native Gold Bundle, Restoration Bundle and a handful of other DirectX Plugs. Using an Audiophile 2496 soundcard. Mackie 1202 VLZ Mixer. Have TRITON - 61 Key Music Workstation Sampler, Korg Kaoss Pad, Two Tech 12's, Kaoss Mixer, Electribe EA1 and ES1, along with various old drum machines/sequencers that rarely see the light of day.

Messhugah, I agree it's tought to critique a FL song, I just threw that one in there cause I thought it came together pretty well for a FL only tune, the other two are definitely more what I focused my time/energy on and could use more criticism.

Hey Laj,


My favorite was Streams....the music on a whole is good to knda kick back to. It seems like it would take a long time to put together?
 
Yeah, definitely aimed at post ganj/chill out/kick back sessions, headphones almost a must. It definitely took a while to put together; alot of little, itty bitty sounds in there. Thanks man!

I have to admit I was asking about your gear with a great deal of skepticism.:o

When I first listened I would have guessed you did some very minor remixes of a few FSOL tracks - especially "Czentre". I'm at work listening with headphones so it hard for me to judge the production, but it sounds so FSOL I thought you might be playing a joke! And this is one big f*cking compliment as I'm sure you know.

You guys should seriously start looking for a label. I look forward to hearing you on the next Em:t sampler. :D

nice stuff. I liked streams the best. No real complaints about your mixing, sonic qualities, etc. It would hard to say what you need to do, since all the stuff is basically synthetic....and the balances are your choice. The EQ on stuff sounds just fine. I try to record ambient/new age stuff myself...and will get around to posting some hear in the near future. Only complaint would be that it takes awhile for *themes* to develop....or things are kinda on one riff...for a lack of better words. But, I realize that is kinda inherent in this type/style of music too. Great job.

Wow, thanks alot Barefoot, that's definitely a really nice compliment, glad you liked 'em! I'd love to find a label that felt the same, don't really know how/where to start looking though.

mixmkr, you're right about the slow devolepment in themes and rather elementary riffs, as I said, these are first semi-complete tracks and so the sound and feel is really all I've been able to establish, I'm learning theory/chord structure/progression slowly so that might take time, but it will come via hard work and lots o' time, thanks for the suggestions/thoughts though!

I only had time to listen to a few cuts but I'll listen some more when I have a chance.

You have some cool sounds there. A few parts are a little rough in the mix and performance but overall pretty cool.

BUT, before you send anyone a demo, here are some things to think about:

1. Electronica is about democratic as it's possible to be in the music industry. You don't necessarily even need a entire CD's worth of music because labels often put out compilations with artists who come, go, and reincarnate seemingly every time you look.

2. Because of the grassroots nature of electronica, labels are small and artist therefore are expected to be pretty much self contained. You can't send in a demo that's ruff around the edges thinking that the record label will hear your potential, sign you, then take you into their multi million dollar studios to polish you up. No. You need send them tracks which are ready to go. Electronica artists are called "Producers". Good production is as much part of your job as creating the music itself.

3. Electronica record labels are small because the market is small. You're not going to get rich. But you just might get to spend your time with some of the most creative and good natured people on the planet.:)

I wouldn't send your demo in yet. You need to work on your production skills more (as do most of us). But you have some excellent music so keep tweaking. And don't send it to Em:t. I didn't realize it, but they're now defunct.:(

I need to get back to work, but I'll post again. I want to ask you how you got some specific- really cool - sounds.

Hey barefoot, I really appreciate you taking the time to dig up those links for me. Those labels are all over my personal cd collection, especially astralwerks. What do you think about wax-tracks, are they relatively the same sized company, that's the label I would most LIKE to be a part of, I can dream anyways. In any event thanks again man and ask away!

I've heard SF is the place to be (in the US, along with LA and NY) for electronica these days, agree or nah!

I listened to them in reverse order (last to first).

You should seriously try to get your music added to some movie soundtracks. :) definitely #1 and #3.

The 2nd song is something I would play at my afterhours club at about 8 or 9 in the morning, to help the people wind down.

Once again, GREAT "sounds".

You should be proud of yourself. :D

You mentioned movie soundtracks and I was just wondering if you could explain what that's all about and how such a process gets started (ie where to send cd's, etc.)

it's funny when you use fruity loops, something happens...i can see your patterns setup...i know what sounds you are using..i also use fruity loops...i just upgraded to the Full version 3.4. . i like the first track..my first recommendation would be to drain some of that low end out, i am playing it on my Pioneer home stereo with 12" Cerwin Vegas without the superbass button pressed and it is very rumbly...it is hard for me to say this, because i am a bass head at heart, but this track is simply too bass heavy.. very beautiful arrangement however, i could mellow out to this if it was eq'd better...as it is, too distracting...this stuff is marketable, i agree with the others..i'd wait to send it out until you polish it, mayeb atke your raw tracks to a real studio and have it mastered...it'll be the best couple hundred dollars you'll spend....over all, nice angle...it's frustrating when the sonic of the song takes away from the composition..don't get discouraged, it can be fixed and when it is, the track with be a hundred times better..good job, keep it going.. if you have time come check me out at

Hey thanks for the input samich. I know exactly what you mean in regards to FL, I guess that's why I never make songs on it in their entirety, that one just all came at once and I thought it had a decent sound for FL that is. Just listened to "Rabbit Renewed," liked it alot, nice soothing melody. Listening to "Movie Circles" right now and this one's really nce too, you have some definite mixing skills, great sound, everything sits really nice.

In regards to your comments about the bass heavy nature of the tracks, your right man, it's an issue I'm trying to remedy. The problem is that the low-end is obviously very integral to the track, it comes in and out in terms of intensity but is the only track that sticks it out for the whole song. You have any reccomendations as to what fz to cut a bit while still not taking away from that bubbly bath tub feel that I was shooting for. I don't have very good monitors so EQ tips are very much needed/helpful. Again thanks for listening and I look forward to any ideas.

"Czentre"

Sound quality:
All and all, it appears to be rather nice. For some constructive critisizm, the string after 2 mins has very much resonance, it hurts my ears when listening with headphones.

Effects:
I have to say I haven't listened to alot of music this style and generally I like all that is electronic music and I like the mood which you've set with your mystical sound effects and strings.
The necessary effects like reverb and delay are applied normally and properly.

Duration/Repetition:
I don't think it was too long nor boring. The mood is just so disctinctive. Almost like from a horror movie. I guess some parts of this track would fit into a horror flick.

Mixing:
Nice. Except the string I mentioned, in first half.

Melodies:
You have created a unique atmosphere and that piano sound you just gotta like.

Summary:
Interesting track with a good vibe and original decisions.

I just listened to all three tunes. I dont know too much about this style but I will say it sounded real good. There was definitely a dark vibe that I liked. Someone mentioned perhaps a good horror movie soundtrack, I'm also thinking this would go good in a porno movie as well. I agree with the previous comment about some of the volumes, but it's cool as a whole. Great sounds.

Thanks men, much appreciated. I have crap monitors right now and it's obvious it shows. The hard part is that I don't want to lose the track's ambient integrity by cutting vol and/or fz, guess gotta just work on "putting it to tape"/tracking at better levels. Very other-earthly, haunting...!

The creepy piano motif that droned throughout was a nice effect...
