hey everybody, this is my first post here. I've been looking for a place online to get feedback on my home recordings and it looks like I've found it. Anyway, my original music is something like punk with soul and indie rock mixed in, kind of in the vein of cold war kids or the white stripes I would like to think. My recordings are usually more like demos for bandmates, and I lean towards a sort of dirty, lo fi recording process.

I would love some feedback on the first song here, This Bird Has Flown. Thanks a lot!

neat song and decent performance.
I think you'll find that most of us are fairly critical of lo-fi since that's part of the goal of trying to learn about the recording process .... trying to improve what everything sounds like.
I do find this to have an overall dirty sort of sound ...... like an overlay of distortion that I don't personally care for. Although it fits that lo-fi trend very well ...... I just don't like lo-fi ..... I mean, when the song's as good as this, I want to hear it in pristine "youy are there" quality.

But in case you've missed it, this is a positive response ..... I REALLY like the tune ...... your songwriting chops are there man. I look forward to hearing more from ya'.

thanks for listening! I'm glad you liked it. As for the whole pristine/dirty thing, I can definitely appreciate a pristine recording but for this genre of music I can't really see it. I know i'm probably making a few people here mad right now, but for me rock and roll and pristine don't really work together. I'm more from the Astral Weeks/Led Zep II camp of letting everything blend together in a big gross melting pot. That being said, I would love some pointers on making this recording a little more pleasing to these well-tuned ears we have around here.

oh but Astral Weeks and any Led Zep are pristine, recording wise, compared to current lo-fi styles.
You won't make anyone mad, BTW, but it will spark off 'lively' discussions. :D

However, I don't want to derail the thread ..... maybe I'll start a lo-fi thread.

The main thing is that this is a great song and within the confines of the lo-fi thing, I find it to be pretty well recorded.
Nice job and welcome to the board.

As Bob said, the songwriting is pretty good.

I like the bass tone a lot, but it sounds like it's leaning a little too far left.

No comments on the guitar tone; it works for the song, but I'm not really excited about it.

The vocals have a kind of "I'm trapped in a tin can" kind of reverb. If you can find a better verb for the vocals, I'd definitely go for it.

As a side tip, a lot of people around here don't like myspace. You'll tend to get more responses if you use a higher-fidelity service like Soundclick or lighningmp3.

Welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy it here.

thanks for the comments!

the guitar tone is my tele that's been my main and only guitar since i was thirteen through a sovtek mig-50, I use that tone as my main rhythm sound pretty much all the time. It definitely inspires me, I'm kinda bummed you don't like it:(

I love that you like the bass tone, it's a danelectro through the same sovtek with a big muff, and a fender bass amp.

Like I said earlier, this is really just a demo that I wasn't super worried about making sound awesome. Everything's a first take except for the drums, which took a few takes cause I kinda suck at drums. Hopefully this will lead to an EP which will be much better quality. Thanks for the tip on the myspace thing, I'll be using a better service when I have something good to share.

It's not that I dislike the guitar tone. I'm just not excited about it.

However, if you really like that tone, you should probably ignore my opinion. You're the one playing it after all! :D

The songwriting is intricate and well crafted- but for this style of music I think the recording is just too Plan 9 punkish. This quality of sound works for punk and simple, agressive music, but IMO this would shine with some polish.

I'm glad people appreciate the songwriting because that's the part i care most about at this point in production. There will definitely be some better quality stuff to come.

I really liked the first song. Listened to the whole thing (which is a complement to you since I often find myself hitting the pause button before the middle of some music). I like the flavor of Zeppelin you have and the music is unpredictable enough to keep it interesting, but definitely not so unpredictable as to become weird. Nice work! (PS...I listened to the entire second song too!)

thanks! the led zep comparison is interesting to me because although they are absolutely my favorite band, I didn't really think of this song as being particularly derivative of them. I guess sometimes the influences shine through unexpectedly
