Hey

I am in need of my first sound synth and I'm not sure what to buy. I have a DIGI 002, Logic 5.5.1 & a MIDI only keybord. So now all I need is some sounds. I was thinking a Roland or Yamaha , but I heard Roland sounds better all round. What types I am looking for are real sounding intrument patches not oscilator synths. I'm looking to spend around $1,400.

Any help and suggestions would greatly be apreciated.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

how many keys do you need? If not alot I would recommend looking into somehting like a Korg Triton, or a Yamaha Motif... You could also get an 88 weighted key controller for around $3 - 400 and then run it through a Motif rack ($1000) or use your current midi board and run it through a nice rack synth

By the way, welcome to the board! :)

If you already have a MIDI controller, I would look into a nice rack synth...You'll save money without going for one with a keyboard attached, thus being able to afford a nicer synth.

The most important question is what kind of sounds are you looking for?

www.vintagesynth.com is a website I like a lot (it's not just vintage)...though I lean towards more electronic synth stuff...Check it out anyway. They have audio examples for a lot of the synths on there.

Rack synth for sure

I was totaly in the mind of a rack synth. The kind of sounds I'm lookin for are real samples. Bass, Piano, Horns etc. I can use the Logic synths for oscilators for now, but a Virus would be nice. A friend of mine has it and we cant get enough of it.

And it is a pleasure to be here. Thanks for the welcome!

The virus is a coolass synth. But not really made for "real" sounding instruments. I would second the vote the triton rack if your looking for something like this.

Motif 6.

I traded in a whole bunch of gear as part of the payment for mine and don't miss any of them. The Motif does everything I need and more.

If you're looking for acoustic instrument sounds (sorry it irks me when people call these "real" instruments, as electronic oscillator synths are as real as any other instrument), why not look at samplers? Software or hardware/rackmount.

For synthesized/modeled electric pianos and such:
Nord Electro, Lounge Lizard.

For orchestral instruments:
Gigastudio, Kurzweil K2600R or Pc2r with Orchestral ROM.

For sampled acoustic and electric pianos:
Kurzweil K2600R with Vintage keys and Triple Strike piano ROMs.
