Originally, i was going to go for one of those package deals from Musicians Friend/Enemy that included an Mbox Mini with Pro Tools LE. But I came here, did some forum searching, and found quite a few people here didn't seem to care for the Mbox products. I mostly wanted it for the Pro Tools, but someone mentioned a guy would be better off buying a better quality interface and using other more reasonable software.

A few people suggested the Tascam products as they have better pre amps (could someone please verify this with examples/stats maybe??)

Looking at the Tascam products, i'm at a toss up. Budget is everything. Our band currently has good drums, decent drum mics, amps, vocal mics, etc. Our vocal mics are Beta 58's.

My budget will be $500 to $600

What i NEED is an audio interface, studio monitors and software that can multitrack. I'm not going for a pro recording, but something good enough to show off, while giving me headroom to mix, master, etc (you know... the more i play, the better i can produce something). Musicians Friend has these package deals, but they include stuff i don't need... except for maybe the condenser mic. Other than that, i have all the cables and stands.

So, would buying one of these packages to get the condenser mic worth it, or should i stick with the mics i already have and separately buy the audio interface and monitors?? Furthermore, these darn package deals at MF doesn't give me any specs on the Tascam bundle packages or mention any software. It's like they're whoring themselves out for Mbox products.

Here's an example of what i was considering - M-Audio Tascam US-1800 and M-Audio BX5a Recording Package: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Well, it's late, i'm tired, thanks to all willing to input some info here....

I just read somewhere that the Tascam unit comes with Cubasis (but not from MF's site), and that the software supported 48 tracks.

We have a four piece rock band. Can you see any problems with only having 48 tracks?? (i can't imagine any myself)

EDIT - I really need to get away, uhg! - I ran across the Presonus Firestudio. Would that be a good contender??

Presonus Firestudio + Reaper = versatile + economical + more than reasonable quality

So far, from both responses (and text in the included link...thank you), it sounds like the way to go is Firestudio and Reaper... if i can squeeze it in the budget.

Never heard of Reaper, but judging by what i've read, it sounds like something i should dive in to. Would anyone be able to offer some sound samples so i can hear a finished product using the Firestudio? A simple ten second clip would be good enough for me.

Keep the ideas coming!!
