first software recommendations

I finally got myself a computer for the homestead, (all previous posts from work) and I have some questions regarding what software would be right for me. First of all, my intentions. I do all my recording on a Boss Br8, and will probably continue to do so until I learn something else. I have lots of tunes laid down, and I am looking for a way to use MIDI to sync up the BR8 and the PC, so I can record all the individual tracks from br8 to pc in order to do (hopefully) my mixdowns there. I know virtually nothing about the software out there. Is it possible to do moves like pans, fades, effect changes, etc, and save them so they will automatically occur during playback? This would make me a happy little boy. I just dont have enough hands to do all the moves I want in a real time mixdown, you know? Basically, just looking for something fairly easy to learn, but that I won't outgrow in two months, dig? Thanks in advance to any who respond.

Cakewalk Pro Audio and Sonar have the features you're looking for.

If you don't need to record more than 2 tracks in a single take, I would say skip Sonar and go for Cakewalk Home Studio 2002. Its pretty much the same thing as Sonar, but one if its limitations is lack of support for audio cards with more than 2 inputs.

You can do everything you talk about with pan/volume envelopes. I have never done effect changes on a single track in realtime, but I am sure there are other ways to get the same result...

...I just took a look at the program and you can not only automate pan/volume with envelopes, but also such things as FX send/return levels and mutes.
