I didn't do the mastering, but I did the recording, mixing and all that. In other words, everything but the mastering. This is one of the 4 tracks we recorded for a demo, in our drummer's bedroom upstairs. Here's all my specs:

Drums:
-CB kit

Bass:
-Yorkville Bassmaster 100 amp
-Fender Standard Precision bass

Guitar:
-Epiphone Les Paul
-??? Marshall combo amp
-??? Marshall 4x? speaker cab

Recording:
-6 Apex drum mics
-1 Apex kick drum mic
-1 Apex dynamic mic
-1 Apex condensor mic
-Behringer Eurorack MX 2004A mixer
-RME DIGI96/8 PST sound card
-Yorkville YSM-1 monitors
-Adobe Audition software

Seeing as lightningmp3.com doesn't like my MP3s for some reason, I have posted the track up at:

I would be very happy to know what you guys think. Of course, this is already mastered, so I won't be changing anything, but comments are much appreciated.

Sounds pretty good! Interesting vocals, good and tight. Well done.

I think this is a double post and I would rather be in the thread with DavidK than by myself :D :D :D :D so here's my reply from the "other post"

I like the high vocals on the chorus... unique.... Rest of the vocals are cool too.....

Overall a good one, drums/bass/guitar/vocals all clear and easy to separate.

Good rocking tune, a bit like a Green Day tune with this groove.

I like the song, the mix sounds tight and the soundimage works for me!

The only thing i feel, which had made it even better, is that the top frequences feels a bit lost? This is a thing which is easy to fix in the mastering process... Otherwise, the song is cool! Just get rid of the wall between my speakers and myself=)

Thanks for another cool song guys!

Hey, I've heard this before!

And from memory, this sounds like the mastering/remixing has really sharpened it up.

Although...
...perhaps the original pre mastered version had that amateurish feel that might actually sit better with that punkisk cacophony :) Who knows? Whatever, you've got some nice engineering work going on there.

Thanks for sharing the finished product.

I've posted this song before after a simple mix (which I thought was as good as it could get).

In a way, this song could use a bit more style, but the old version was just terrible. It wasn't indie raw, it was crappy raw.

you dont have the most expensive gear by any means..... BUT WOW! sounds great, gotta admit i love the song to

I got all that recording gear, about 15 XLR cables, an Yamaha 10 band / dual channel EQ that I haven't even hooked up yet, a Yamaha receiver, Yamaha CD burner, the entire desktop system the previous owner used, and his desk, and a headphones amp, a whole bunch of small accessories, and jack convertors, patch cables.

Pretty much, he sold me his entire studio for $800CAD ($719USD). It's not prime equipment, but I walked home with everything I would need to record, from the bottom up. And I'm sure I haven't maxed out the potential of it yet either.

Mix sounds good except I could not figure out any of the words. Is this not English?

It's the vocal style, I guess, but it is indeed English.

I tried many times and very hard to hear the words and couldn't so I'd say you need to fix that. I understand the vocal style being an issue but what's the point in having words if you can't hear and understand them? Maybe pronunciating, eq'ing, bringing them forward in the mix, raising the volume or some kind of combination of those would help without changing the style radically.

guitars sound a bit thin, drums could be a little louder,Bass Drum sounds flat.Vocals seem a tad bit loud, then too low @ other times(compression,eq?) but other than that I am diggin the tune and overall mix sounds good and tight.Keep up the good work!

nice song

sounds good man, reminds me of billy talent :P

keep up the good work

Thanks for the input, guys.

As for the Billy Talent reference, many people say that, especially when comparing us to bands they've heard on the radio. I guess that's the closest comparison we have to radio bands.

I don't have much control over drums, seeing as I had single input to my sound card, and I had to premix the drums via my mixer.

Some things I'm shooting for next time I record is:
Drums: Better drum tuning, getting more click to the bass drum, double-micing the snare for more depth and "snare" sound, and seperate tracks for the mics for better control.
Guitars: Better recording technique to get more workable frequency range to work with and more variation in guitar parts to give the songs more life.
Bass: Record with less snapping sounds so I'm not forced to cut out some of the defining frequencies, like I had to this time.
Vocals: More concern for backup vocals and on-pitching execution.

Also, we were done recording everything, rewrote two parts and then went back to change the rest of the overlaying parts. I told my band members that we're not changing anything after we recorded it, but they don't understand stuff like that. They didn't really trust me that much, and I nearly packed up my stuff and left a few times. I'll give some examples some time...

i think the mix is perfect on my laptop speakers. im not a fan of the high pitched voices and such but the verse parts are very pro sounding IMO

im jealous that people with english accents can sound cool like that so easily.

Ditto.....the vocals need to be out front a bit more...otherwise...sounds great!!! :D
