BY first recording "gig", it means this is the first song I have recorded for someone.

The Equipment Used were:
B.L.U.E. Baby Bottle Microphone
Fostex MR-8
iBook
Cubase SL
Jon's, the person I recorded, keyboard.

Jon wanted to pretty much strictly use his keyboard so not much I could do about it there. I recorded it with the Fostex and did have some trouble at the end with this whole "Card Error" ordeal, but other than that it went over pretty smoothly. The first song I recorded was called The Cattle That Cried Wolf. If anyone want's the lyrics to it just let me know.

Any comments on how I could fix it in Cubase SL, if it needs any more work, and how you would go about fixing all of it, would be very appreciated.

Chris;

You only have this thing uploaded at 80kps and it sounds really Lo-Fi. It also sounds like it's much louder on the right side. The first thing that I would do is upload it at least 128kps.

How many tracks did you use on this?

MusicMan91,

The singer doesn't sound comfortable with his lyrics or with being in front of a microphone and singing with headphones.

A lot more practice is in order for him before any serious critique could be offered. As it sits right now, I am tempted to tell him to take up another hobby and that's not something I enjoy doing.
:(

Practice, practice, practice

Cheers! :)

Hah, well really that is not exactly what I had in mind. Besides the comment of being to Lo-Fi, any other suggestions that I could improve on the track myself, for there isn't much I can do about his voice. ;)

Wow, was that really necessary when I asked how I could fix the song on Cubase SL?? Not really. I know it is nice and all to give one's honest opinion, but that is just not even a constructive comment at all.

MM: the sound on this is so lo-fi it's pretty hard to give constructive mix comments. And the performance problems are so glaring that it's kind of hard not to comment on them. I guess what I mean is: you're getting feedback. It may not be the feedback you WANT, but if you keep up this kinda defensive attitude, you'll severely limit your chances of getting any feedback at all.

Just a suggestion.

Cheers,
Chris

I still am confused as to how to make it hi-fi.

Edit: Not only that, but the vocals are off by about a tenth of a second, I just noticed.

MM, you've already been told that an 80kbps mp3 is not really sufficient for critique purposes. If we can at least *hear* the thing than maybe we can give some constructive advice.

My apologies to you if I seemed harsh on your release here at the clinic. I didn't mean it as a personal attack on you or, your talents as an engineer in this project.

You post did ask, "if it needs any more work" and basically, I did cover that aspect in my initial response when I stated that more practice of the playing is required to get a better result.

I understand you wanting to make this sound hi fi but I don't think that is a goal that can be obtained by simply adjusting some levels and eq settings. This needs a complete re-do from scratch, with a better rehearsed performance.

Sorry if I offended you.

Cheers! :)

No, you didn't offend me at all.

What I really need is a larger card, because half way through it I will either get: Card Full or some sort of Card Error.

As I read through the thread though, you did ask an open ended question. "...if it does need anything". Not just the fact that it sounded lo-fi.

Just to "ring in", I'll have to agree and say that it did sound pretty loose. Practicing a song for awhile and tighting it up will force ANYONE to look past the "lo-fi"ness of any tune.

And no need to get your feelings hurt and defensive like before. What better place to hear REAL HONEST thoughts about your stuff, then from digital people running around on highways that will never steer close to your reality.

I mean it is a piece of crap. It was all recorded from a keyboard, via micing the speaker, because it wasnt that new, and it actually sounded better that way then if we wouldve had it go straight through to the MR-8.

WELCOME ... to the board.

Just think, where you will be two years from now ...

I suggest you make a favorite to this thread, and burn it to CD, if it's the only thing you have to burn at this time ... stash it away in a special place ...

That's what I did with my first thread here ... and I got death threats in PM :D

Cattle That Cried Wolf....

As far as the singer and song goes, I actually kind of liked it's uniqueness. (I like weird stuff sometimes)

IMO it sounds like the singer could work on his mic technique.
(Sounds like he was dancing around to me.)

I fully understand having to use whatever gear you have availble, but unless you were using that keyboard for an effect, well... IMO It just isn't the right tool for the job, but it's by no means the end of the world.

To me that sounds like a perfect song to arrange with one of those Groove Box things AND/OR a strong accoustic guitar player and like some simple conga for the beat.

As far as the recording goes...
It's too hard for me to tell what is going on (Sorry), BUT on the positive side you found someone to record, put a session together and used the resources you had availble... All of those are skills that you further developed during the process, so that's cool too.

Things like Ghost suggested about it seeming the singer had problems with the headphones and as I said about the singers possible mic technique needing improvement are things that while not pertaining to the recording itself ARE things that can undermine the hard work you're putting into getting a track together. IMO it's important to consider the things others seem to hear and perhaps use them as things to watch out for as part of the over all process of getting the best out of the preformer while getting it on tape. (Or whichever medium)

Keep at it and keep posting.

Doesn't matter where you are now.... It's always about the NEXT song anyway.

:)
