Hi there,

This is my first post.

I'm starting out and I'm using Audacity to try to record a piece on an electric guitar.

Guitar(Yamaha ERG 121C) > amp input> amp phone > PC mic line in(Acer Aspire)

When I listened to my recording, the quality was very bad. This is after I amplified the level from Audacity.

Is this because I have crappy gear? If the sound quality is really bad, do I immediately start thinking about getting an better amplifier?

Thanks

Normally, I'd say that it might be technique. But in this case, you're running a $100 guitar into (an unnamed amplifier), taking the headphone output of that amplifier and running it into a line-input on a stock computer sound card...

Yeah, you're sort of running uphill on this one.

I can tell you this -- Assuming the amplifier actually sounds decent, you should be putting a mic in front of the amp, going into a mic preamp, into some sort of reasonably decent (I'm not saying "expensive" I'm just saying "reasonably decent") interface into your computer.

Ok this sounds doable. What sound card do you recommend? I don't even have a decent laptop for music production.

Focusrite Scarlett and Steinberg interfaces seem to be the most recommended around here, so try looking into there.
Also you will need xlr cable for mic, a decent mic like shure sm57 and stand for microphone.

+1 on the Focusrite Scarlett. Looks like a 2i2 would be good for you since you're just starting out. Also 57 is good for guitar amps. $250 will get you a decent recording. Also read up on mic placement.
