Solved First recording attempt

I made these covers of Alice in Chain's "ANGRY CHAIR" and "DOWN IN A HOLE" when I first got my Yamaha AW16G last Dec. I didn't spend a lot of time with this as I just recorded the tracks, cleaned up the dirty parts in the vocals and added no effects. All recording done in my living room

I am singing all the vocals.
I am playing all the instruments EXCEPT the drums.

About the guitars:

1. Distorted guitars are a Digitech RP-7 coz I can't use my Marshall Head in the house.
2. The clean guitar parts are my Gibson Flying V with EMG60 in the neck through an old boss Chorus pedal right into to the recorder.
3. I did not have a compressor at the time.

Basically I am throwing these up here to see what you thought of my first attempt at recording music. I don't like Cakewalk so I am looking for an alternative to that. Maybe Adobe or something else that's affordable?

Anyway, listen and tell me what you think. I know I don't sound like Layne Staley, I just love AIC and wanted to pay tribute some way (and break in the new recorder).

Let me start by saying that you have a really good voice. Fits the style.

Drums sound nice.

Bass is a bit low for my tastes but that's ok. Maybe some compression there.

The clean guitars are ok.

The dirt guitars are, well, bad. They sound like you're playing in a hole. No Pun Intended. I'm not that familiar with the RP-7, but if you get the chance. Re-record the distorted guitar parts with the Marshall.

I'm going through this right now. I recorded a piece using my ADA Mp1 directly into my console. It didn't turn out so good. So I'm going to re-record the parts with my amp.

All in all, for the first time, this is really good. Keep up the good work.

I'm gonna re-record both songs just because I love them so much. I might throw in "Would?" as well. What do you think I should do about the guitar sound?

Should I:

a) Get an isolation box for my Marshall or
b) Go with a PodXT?

Well I think it sounds great besides for the distorted guitar. Sounds really liveless. I would suggest either a Vamp2 or mic you marshall
 
MAN.. the guitars sound like my old RAT pedal cranked through a 5 inch speaker!! :eek:

Vox and harmonies sounds great. Slap some comp on the drums and bass. Great songs though man. RoCK!!

Thanks! Any idea how I can compress the drums and bass without re-recording them? I have a RNC.
 
Well I'm not the person to ask as I have not used that Yamaha AW16G. But if I had to guess it would be bounce the track while having your RNC on a Send channel. Anyone else?

Jesus man those "distorted" guitars are... well the worst distorted guitars I've ever heard. Buy an old POD or something... jeeze man.
 
You have no option re-record with micing the Marshall. The RP-7 is a digetch multi effects floor board right? I think my freind had one and I came to the conclusion it was the worst sounding distortion I have ever heard.

I agree. I can't mic my Marshall. I don't have an isolation box. If there was an option for a cheap isolation box I would get one. Otherwise should I get a PodXT?
 
A Pod will get you good recordings, but if you got a Marshall why woulden't you mic it?

I live in an apartment so I can't use my Marshall. It would get me thrown out. Even an isolation box would still be too loud, I think.
 
Ok, should I get the RACK MOUNTED one for $700 or the Kidney Bean one? Is the rack mounted one worth $400 more?
 
First recording

If that's your first recording, all I can say is WOW!
I won't offer any criticism because I don't have the experience to do so. But I will say this. Just keep it up. It really sounds nice.

You have a great voice. Very good recordings for a first try. I have to agree that the distorted sounds suck. I've gotten some good fake distorted sounds from Amplitube software.
